The Javanese cat, or Javanese, despite its “Asian” name, is not directly related to the island of Java. The name appeared as a poetic addition to the Siamese-Balinese line: Balinese – island of Bali, Javanese – island of Java. In fact, the breed was bred in the USA in the 70s of the XX century as a result of selection work with Balinese, Orientals and Siamese. The goal was to get a graceful cat with a silky long coat, graceful body and exquisite color. In different felinological systems Javanese can have different status: in CFA it is a separate breed (long-haired Oriental), in TICA – a variation of Balinese or a part of the Oriental group.
Appearance
Its body is long, slender but muscular, with ideal proportions. The head is wedge-shaped, with large, expressive ears that give the muzzle a characteristic “flying” look. Eyes – almond-shaped, bright, mostly green or aquamarine. Wool – long, thin, shiny, lays on the body like silk, but does not form a dense undercoat, so the cat has a light and weightless appearance. The tail is long, with an elegant “feather” at the end. The weight of an adult cat ranges from 3 to 5 kg, males are slightly larger than females.
One of the most interesting features of the Javanese cat is its coloring. Unlike Siamese or Balinese, which have only color-point, Javanese can be any color: from classic white or black to tobacco, blue, red, cream, chocolate, smoky, tortoiseshell, tabby and others. It was because of the variety of colors that the breed did not have a stable classification for a long time, but later gained popularity just for its colorful uniqueness.
The character of the Javanese cat
The Javanese cat is very talkative, with a soft but insistent voice. She does not tolerate indifference: she wants to be in the center of events, participate in the household, check packages, look out the window with you, sit next to you while eating breakfast, reading or even showering. These cats become attached to humans and do not like to be left alone. Their intelligence is no exaggeration: the Javanese learns easily, memorizes habits, studies its owner’s schedule, opens doors with its paws, and can fetch toys like a dog.
Along with this, the Javanese cat is not clingy. She is sensitive to mood, easily adapts to changes, gets along well with other animals and children if she is not offended. Extremely active – it needs space to jump, shelves, branches, toys and interactive entertainment.
Care and Grooming of the Javanese
Although the Javanese cat looks luxurious, grooming it does not require over-exertion. The wool does not have a dense undercoat, so it does not pile up in tangles. A light combing once a week is enough to keep its shine and structure. It is important to keep the ears clean – the large ear flaps need regular inspection. Eyes, teeth and claws – as standard, as with most cats. It is also worth considering their activity: Javanese need games, scratching posts, places for jumping. If you live in an apartment, organize vertical space, because these cats are very fond of heights.
For more in-depth care, the Javanese cat is ideal for salon treatments. In V.O.G DOG SALON groomers will delicately comb the silky coat, remove dust and grease, perform preventive ear cleaning, trim the claws and make the cat even more graceful. It is important not to turn grooming into a punishment: a Javanese is an emotional creature, so everything should be gentle, without coercion.
