6 reasons why you should regularly trim your Yorkie

Skin and Coat Health: Regular grooming helps maintain the skin and coat health of the Yorkshire Terrier. This breed has long hair that can become tangled and knotted. Trimming helps prevent unpleasant consequences such as skin irritation and the formation of hairballs.
Hygiene: Yorkies may have hair growing around the ears and eyes, which can obstruct visibility and become a source of irritation. Regular trimming of this area helps maintain hygiene and the health of your pet's eyes and ears.
Activity: Long hair can restrict a Yorkie's movement and activity. Excessively long hair can interfere with running and playing. Trimming eases movement and makes activity more comfortable.
Thermoregulation: Yorkies have a small size and thin hair, making them more prone to overheating or getting cold. A moderate hair length after trimming helps maintain a heat balance and prevent overheating in hot weather.
Infection Prevention: Long hair can hold dirt, debris, and moisture, promoting the development of skin infections. Regular trimming reduces the risk of infection and makes skin care easier.
Appearance: Trimming gives Yorkies a neat and well-groomed appearance. It highlights their elegance and gives them their own unique style.

Yorkies are energetic and devoted companions who adore the attention of their owners. They are friendly and sociable, but can also be a bit independent. These dogs get along well with children and other pets, but may be wary of strangers.

Characteristics:

The Yorkshire Terrier breed, or simply Yorkie, is known for its exquisite appearance and picturesque character. These small dogs have fluffy fur that can be of various shades, from steel gray to golden and brown.

Needs:

Caring for Yorkies requires attention to their fur, which needs regular brushing and trimming to maintain its beauty and health. It’s also important to provide them with activity and physical exercise, despite their small size.

DeLuxe – Complex for Yorkshire Terrier

13 steps for the maximum transformation of your Yorkie

Full-fledged Peticure

We trim the nails even for the most scared and restless pets. No sedatives! In extreme cases, we trim together, holding the dog. Afterwards, we always file the nails so they don't scratch and shape them. Next is the antimicrobial treatment and moisturization of the interdigital folds, and the paws are treated with protective wax.
If you heard your pet clicking its nails on the floor - it's time for a trim.
Please note: in young dogs, due to overgrown nails, the skeleton may form incorrectly

Removal of hair from the ear canal

This is a mandatory procedure for Yorkies, Malteses, Shih Tzus, and Poodles. We pluck the hair from the ears because after trimming, prickly stubs remain that bother the dog. The pet may be anxious for the first time, but don't worry - the procedure is painless

Combing out mats

This is a necessary procedure. It allows to get rid of mats and prepares the fur and skin for bathing. Thanks to combing, the skin and fur are maximally saturated with beneficial substances from cosmetics. If the dog is not combed out beforehand, the skin will dry out during blow-drying and dandruff will appear

Bathing with premium shampoo, balm, and conditioner

We bathe your pet in a professionally equipped bath. The dog is restrained with a short leash to prevent it from jumping out unexpectedly. We use premium shampoo, balm, and conditioner, choosing them based on the type of fur and age (for puppies, adults, those with dry skin, etc.). The bathing cosmetics are made with natural oils, so the pleasant smell lasts for over a week. We also rinse and clean the eyes during this process

Fruit mask with silk proteins

Passion fruit mask with silk proteins.
It moisturizes and softens the skin, preventing dryness and flaking. It strengthens the hair follicles, making them firm and stimulating the growth of beautiful fur.
It nourishes the hair with beneficial components, making the fur smooth, elastic, and shiny. By preventing the penetration of ions from exhaust fumes outdoors, it keeps the pet's fur clean, shiny, and smooth for a long time

Teeth cleaning

Thanks to the toothpaste for our furry friends, dental plaque is quickly removed, keeping the enamel of the teeth clean and healthy, eliminating unpleasant odors and bacteria. And thanks to the special composition of the toothpaste, which has special taste qualities, all pets enjoy the process immensely!

Anal gland cleaning

The anal glands are specific sacs in which a secret substance accumulates, allowing pets to distinguish each other. But this secret doesn't always come out naturally, so they need to be regularly checked and cleaned to maintain your furry friend's health

Ear wiping and cleaning

After bathing, we dry the pet with an individual towel. We allow them to dry a bit. Then, we proceed to clean their ears

Drying and styling the fur

We dry the pet's fur with a professional grooming hairdryer (booster). It doesn't heat up and has special modes for adjusting power and warm airflow. During the drying process, we continuously comb the fur to straighten it and style it beautifully

Hygienic haircut

We trim the fur between the toes, on the belly, in the genital area and around the bottom (if necessary). We carefully shape the ears. If needed, we remove the fur in the corners of the eyes. We shape the lower contour of the paws

Breed/Model Haircut

We trim the body, paws and head of your pet to give it a breed-specific shape or a creative look. Before starting the work, the groomer will suggest haircut options that would suit your pet

Final Fur Polishing

In the end, we treat the fur with a special anti-static agent for dogs with a pleasant scent. After treatment, the fur becomes instant, doesn't electrify, and doesn't get tangled

Perfume

Application of the client's chosen perfume for an impeccable and very long-lasting scent

Yorkshire Terrier hairstyles:

Standard Cut: This is a classic style in which the fur is cut evenly over the entire body. This cut maintains a neat appearance and makes care easier.

Semi-Fluffy Cut: Here the fur is left long on the legs, but shorter on the body. This creates a harmonious balance between elegance and practicality.

Traditional Head: With this cut, the fur on the head is left long and structured, highlighting the expressiveness of the face.

Short Cut: Some owners prefer a short cut for a more active lifestyle and simplified care.

Exclusive Cuts: To create a unique look, you can choose unusual and creative cuts. This may include dyeing the fur, decorations, and non-standard shapes.

Frequently Asked Questions on Caring for a Yorkie

How to care for a Yorkie?

Caring for a Yorkshire terrier requires regular hygienic care. Special attention should be paid to daily combing of the long fur to prevent the formation of tangles and mats. Regular trimming, especially around the eyes and chest, will help maintain cleanliness and comfort. It is also important to regularly trim the nails and monitor ear hygiene. In addition, provide proper nutrition, regular physical exercise, and attention to your pet's health, including regular veterinary visits.

How to trim a Yorkshire terrier's nails?

To trim the nails of a Yorkshire terrier, use special scissors or claw clippers. Carefully trim the tips of the claws, avoiding cuts to the vessels and nerves inside the claw. Pay attention to the pink part (pulp), from which the vessels run - do not cut it to avoid bleeding. If the claws are dark and it is difficult to determine the location of the vessel, it is better to consult a veterinarian or groomer.

How often should a Yorkie be trimmed?

The frequency of trimming a Yorkshire terrier depends on the length of its fur and the chosen style. On average, it is recommended to trim a Yorkie every 6-8 weeks to maintain a neat appearance and prevent tangling and mat formation. If you prefer a shorter haircut, you may need to trim the dog more often, and long fur may allow an interval of up to 10-12 weeks. It is important to consider the individual characteristics of your pet's fur and consult a groomer or veterinarian to determine the optimal trimming frequency.

How long does it take to trim a Yorkie?

Hygienic care will take about 1.5 hours. If your pet has long fur, groomers may need a little more time. Comprehensive care, which also includes a model haircut, takes about 2 hours. If the dog is all matted, an additional hour will be added to the standard time.

Can I pick up the dog later?

Yes, it is possible. If you notify us of your desire to pick up the dog later, after the haircut, we will keep it until your arrival. We have an additional "overexposure" service. You can come for your pet at any convenient time before the salon closes — until 7 p.m. The dog will be waiting for you in a comfortable place, where there is clean water, a hygienic diaper, and toys.

When can a Yorkie be trimmed for the first time?

Professional groomers recommend doing the first haircut at 5-6 months, not earlier. By this time, the fur of Yorkshire terriers changes from puppy to adult, and trimming will not harm it. Moreover, the dog matures and will more easily tolerate all necessary procedures.

How often should a Yorkie be bathed?

On average — once every 10-14 days. If you use high-quality shampoos and conditioners, like we have in V.O.G DOG salons, you can wash your Yorkie every week. This bathing frequency is due to the small size of dogs of this breed. Their fur gets very dirty on walks, loses its decent appearance, and begins to smell bad. After visiting our salon, your dog can boast shiny, well-groomed fur and will smell good for a whole week thanks to cosmetics based on natural oils.

In which cases should you not cut a Yorkie’s hair?

If you are preparing your dog for a show and are growing their fur, your Yorkie will only need hygienic care and combing to prevent mats in their long coat. In this case, you should not cut your Yorkie's hair.

How is it best to get rid of mats?

If your Yorkshire Terrier's fur is in a severely neglected state and there are solid mats, the optimal solution would be to shave it off. This option will be cheaper. If there aren’t many mats, it’s better to choose a combing procedure. Although combing may require additional time and a small additional payment, it is definitely the best choice for the health and comfort of your pet.

And how do you handle it if the dog bites?

We manage without strictness and anesthesia. Even for the most angry and aggressive Yorkie, a muzzle is enough. You do not have to bring a muzzle with you - we will choose a suitable size from our stocks. To prevent the dog from trying to jump off the grooming table, we secure it with a special short leash.

Should Yorkies have hair removed from the corners of their eyes?

This is necessary if:

the Yorkie has a cap on its head, not a tail;
you are ready to cut the dog regularly - no less than once every 2.5 months;
the fur on the nose grows directly towards the eyes.
If your dog has a tail on its head (top-knot) and a beard, or if you cut it infrequently, then you do not need to remove the hair in the corners of the eyes. Our groomers always coordinate all the details of the procedure with the owners to meet your needs and ensure your pet's comfort.

Can Yorkies have hair shaved near the buttocks and genitals?

Owners find it convenient if the fur on a Yorkie’s buttocks is shaved, especially if the dog has a short haircut overall. In this case, feces do not stick to the fur under the tail. This is very convenient and practical. But if your pet has an elongated haircut, it will look funny with a shaved buttock. Therefore, we recommend removing the fur directly around the anus, and everything below, just trim it hygienically. Note that some Yorkies have a very sensitive buttock and stomach area and are prone to irritation after shaving. Such dogs after cutting roll on their buttocks, lick the shaved places, and redness may appear on their stomachs. This most often happens to Yorkies with coarser fur. If you have already encountered such a reaction, please warn us about it. The groomer will leave a little more fur on the problematic areas, so it is short but does not cause problems for the animal.

The Yorkshire Terrier (Yorkie, Mini Yorkie, Micro Yorkie, Yorkie Mini) is renowned for its long, silky hair. To keep the coat in top condition, regular grooming is a necessity. The long hairs of a Yorkie can easily become tangled, forming mats that can cause discomfort for the dog. Regular grooming also helps maintain hygiene, especially during warmer months.

The frequency of grooming depends on the individual characteristics of each dog, but on average, it is recommended to undergo this procedure every 4-6 weeks.

Yorkshire Terrier: How to prepare for grooming? At what age can the first grooming session take place?

Preparing a Yorkshire Terrier for grooming is important to ensure a smooth process, free from stress for both the dog and the person. Here are some recommendations on how to prepare properly:

  • First and foremost, thoroughly comb the Yorkie’s coat. This will help eliminate mats and tangled areas.
  • Wash your pet with a special shampoo for long-haired breeds. Clean fur is easier to groom.
  • After washing, dry the fur with a hairdryer while continuing to comb it, making it soft and even.
  • Prepare all the necessary tools, which should be clean and sharp.
  • Especially if it’s your pet’s first grooming, be patient and calm.

The most appropriate time for a Yorkie puppy’s debut in grooming is at 5 months of age. By this time, the fur becomes denser and straighter, posing challenges when combing and increasing the risk of mat formation.

Trends in Grooming for Micro and Mini Yorkies

Just like fashion trends for humans, grooming trends for Yorkshire Terriers can change from year to year. However, certain styles and directions have remained popular over the recent years. Here are some of them:

  • “Papillon” (Butterfly): A short cut, but long hair remains on the ears.
  • “Lion’s Mane”: Long hair on the head and neck, with a closely trimmed body.
  • “Pony”: Long hair on the front legs and a short trim on the back ones.
  • “Teddy Bear”: Medium-length hair all over the body with an emphasis on the head, giving the appearance of a small bear.
  • “Asian Style” (also known as “Korean”): Focus on volume in specific areas, such as on the paws, ears, or tail, while other parts of the body might be closely trimmed. The baby face looks especially adorable in this style. It is often paired with bright accessories or hair decorations.
  • “Natural Style”: Long hair all over the body, trimmed only for contour alignment. This is popular for the standard Yorkie breed.

When choosing a grooming style for your super-mini Yorkie, it’s essential to consider not just the current fashion trends but also the Yorkie’s needs, her lifestyle, and how much time you’re willing to dedicate to coat maintenance.

Professional Grooming of Yorkshire Terriers: How does professional grooming differ from at-home grooming?

Grooming of Yorkies can be done both at home and in professional salons. Here’s how professional care differs from home grooming:

  • Professional Tools: Salons have professional-grade equipment, such as specialized clippers, scissors, combs, which ensure a high-quality and safe trim. They also have grooming tables with non-slip surfaces to ensure the pet’s safety, as well as specialized bathtubs.
  • Trained Groomers: Groomers are trained in various techniques and know which haircut style is best suited for each pet. They are also knowledgeable about which shampoos and conditioners are best for the breed.
  • Salon Environment: Salons are designed to provide comfort and safety for pets throughout the procedure.

In contrast, at home, it’s often challenging and sometimes impossible to provide everything necessary for comprehensive and high-quality care for your beloved pet.

Haircuts for Boys and Girls

The haircut style for a male Yorkie is characterized by its short and convenient length. This option is perfect for energetic little boys. Fine details, such as neat sideburns or stylishly shaped ears, give the look a special charm. Closely trimmed paws draw attention to their strength and athleticism.

Elegant contours and refined accents define the ideal haircut for female Yorkies. Stylists and owners often opt for long and graceful haircuts, highlighting the refined style and grace of these pets. Accessories like cute bows and elegant hairpins add a finishing touch to the look. To add a unique twist, you can leave the fur long and luxurious on the ears or paws, or style a fashionable “skirt” on the rear part of the body.
