Cockapoo is a lively mixture of playfulness, intelligence and tenderness, which was born from the happy union of Cocker Spaniel and Poodle. That is why the Cockapoo combines the best qualities of both breeds: from the Spaniel he got a kind, trusting character, and from the Poodle – intelligence, hypoallergenic coat and charisma of a small aesthete. The first Cockapoo puppies appeared in the 60’s in the USA – first as an experiment to create the “perfect pet dog”, and then this mix conquered the world and became a separate breed with millions of fans.
Cockapoos come in three main types – those resulting from crossing a Poodle with an American Cocker Spaniel, an English Cocker, or other cockapoos. Depending on the size of the Poodle, which has 50 to 75% “fluffy” genetics in its blood, the dogs can be Mini, Medium or larger (Standard), but in most cases the weight of an adult cockapoo does not exceed 10-15 kg. It is a dog, convenient for life both in an apartment and in a private house – the main thing is to have someone to love near it.
Its coat is a subject of a separate admiration. Soft, wavy or curly, incredibly pleasant to the touch, it creates the very image of a “living toy” that makes passers-by stop. But behind the beauty is hidden responsibility – such wool requires regular care: kokapu shearing, combing, delicate washing. But it causes allergies less often, does not shed in big wisps and gives the owner the feeling that he touches a cloud.
In terms of character – cockapoos are as if born to be “friends to all”. They are sociable, very human, easy to train and sensitive to their owner’s moods. They like to be part of your life – and bake cookies with you, and fall asleep on the couch together, and entertain guests with their funny jumps. Cockapoo puppies are real energetic: mischievous, frisky, without a drop of aggression, but with boundless curiosity. They should be socialized from an early age, taught with affection, because they are very sensitive to intonation, intonation is more important to them than commands.
It is interesting that kokapu do not have official recognition among traditional cynological clubs, but this does not prevent the breed from confidently taking a place among the most favorite family dogs in the world. They are bought by people with allergies, families with children, and the elderly – because they are adaptable, sincere, and touchingly loyal.
Cockapoo health is usually good, especially in dogs from responsible breeders. Still, as with all mixed breeds, hereditary problems can occur – with ears, eyes, knees or skin. Because of the ears, which are tight-fitting and poorly ventilated, the ear canal should be checked regularly. In terms of longevity, Cockapoos make their owners happy – they live an average of 12-15 years, and with proper care, nutrition and regular grooming – even more.
✅Puppy Cut:
This is one of the most popular and comfortable options for cockapoos. The hair is cut to the same length all over the body - usually 1 to 2 centimeters, depending on the season and desired density. The head remains rounded, with open eyes, and the ears can be slightly lengthened or also shortened for comfort. This haircut gives the dog the look of a little bear, makes grooming at home easier and is suitable even for those who do not have time to brush their dog often.
✅ Teddy Bear Cut:
This option is fluffier than the previous one. The length of the hair remains about 3-4 cm, and special attention is paid to the shape of the head. The groomer pulls the muzzle into a soft circle, leaving the fur around the eyes a little longer to create that "bear" look. The body is also slightly rounded, and the paws remain fluffy but neat. This style requires more frequent brushing, but looks incredibly cute.
✅ Short Haircut for Summer (Summer Cut):
For the warmer months or dogs that are very active, often run on grass and love the water, a short machine-made cockapoo haircut is often chosen. The body hair is stripped down to 0.5-1 cm, while the ears and head are left softer and slightly elongated to keep the cockapoo's recognizable silhouette. This is a very practical option: no tangling of the coat, less dirt, less chewing when combing.
Classic Cocker Haircut (Cocker Style):
This haircut is inspired specifically by the Cocker Spaniel, one of the ancestors of the breed. The hair on the back and sides is cut short, while the chest, belly and legs are left longer - the classic "spaniel" strands are formed. The ears are left long, and the hair on them is trimmed along the contour. This option is suitable for owners who want to emphasize the breed appearance of the Cockapoo, but are ready to maintain the shape of the coat at home on a daily basis.
✅ Lamb Cut/Fluffy Legs:
In this option, the body is cut short, as in the Puppy Cut, but the paws remain voluminous, fluffy and rounded. As a result, the dog looks like he's on fluffy "legs" and the effect is especially cute when moving. This style requires regular brushing of the paws - otherwise the coat will quickly fall off, especially after walks.
✅ Natural Curly Look:
Ideal for cockapoos with a distinctly curled coat that have more poodle genetics. In this style, the coat is trimmed minimally - only to smooth and shape. The groomer keeps the natural curls, shapes them all over the body, slightly rounds the head, clearly emphasizes the eyes, and leaves the ears longer. The style looks airy and light, but requires good home care - conditioners and regular combing so that the curls do not turn into tangles.
The optimal frequency is every 6-8 weeks. It is important not only to cut the length, but also to comb the coat between clippings in order to avoid hairballs.
The most popular are the puppy haircut, the "teddy bear" haircut, and the short summer haircut. The choice depends on the type of coat, the season and how often you are willing to brush your dog at home.
Cockapoos are one of those breeds that hardly shed at all. Thanks to their poodle heritage, their coat does not shed seasonally like most other dogs, but grows continuously, looking more like hair than a classic coat. However, this doesn't mean that it doesn't need to be groomed. On the contrary - due to the lack of natural renewal, the coat will quickly pile up into tangles if not combed out.
Once every 3-4 weeks is optimal. If the dog is active or has an oily coat, it can be done a little more often. It is important to use quality pet shampoos.
Otitis media (due to long ears), allergies, lacrimation, knee problems and genetic eye diseases are common. Regular check-ups with a veterinarian are a must to avoid serious and chronic diseases.
Yes! They are smart, quick to learn, and respond well to positive reinforcement. The main thing is not to shout or push: cockapoos are very sensitive to the tone of voice.
At least once a week. The ears are long, poorly ventilated and therefore prone to inflammation. Regular cleaning and inspection is the key to healthy Cockapoo ears.
Technically yes, but it's not easy. Wool requires the right tools, technique and experience. If you don't have the skills, it's better to entrust it to a salon - the result will be beautiful and safe.
Be sure to brush 2-3 times a week, especially in the groin areas, behind the ears and on the paws. Use moisturizing sprays, avoid dry combing and watch out for tangles.
Cockapoo puppies can be groomed for the first time from 3 months of age. It is better to start with light procedures: trimming around the eyes, paws, sanitary area, introduction to hair dryer and combing. This will help to avoid stress in the future and form a proper grooming habit.
