The Border Collie is one of the smartest breeds in the world, often referred to as “living intelligence on four legs”. Their history dates back to the border between England and Scotland, which is where the breed’s name (from the word border ) comes from. Bred as herding dogs, Border Collies impress with their incredible efficiency, quick thinking, obedience and desire to interact with humans. They are partners who sense their owner’s moods with half a glance.
These dogs are extremely active, inquisitive and emotionally sensitive. Border Collies have a wonderful character. They are easy to train, love games, competitions, Frisbee, agility and any active activity. Border Collie dogs are ideal for people who lead an active lifestyle, and for families with children, if the children of course respect animals. They are not aggressive, but can be a little wary of strangers – it is their natural caution, not anger. The main thing is to give the Borderer a job, because without it, he can come up with “activities” that the owner will not like.
Border collies come with short, medium or long hair. The most popular type is medium-long coat with an undercoat that forms a beautiful “collar” and “pants”. They have many recognized colors: brown, classic black and white, merle (marbled), chocolate-white, tricolor, red, sandy, blue. But regardless of color, all Border Collies have one thing in common – the coat requires regular, attentive and competent care.
Although Border Collies are not decorative dogs, their coat requires professional grooming. First of all – because of the thick undercoat, which easily falls off, causes itching, irritation and even skin diseases. At V.O.G DOG SALON, our groomers carefully comb out the undercoat, remove tangles, care for the skin, paws, ears and eyes. We work with your Border Collie’s activity and lifestyle in mind, so that the coat stays clean, healthy and does not interfere with the pet’s movement. Even if you need show grooming for your Border Collie, we can help you.
Does a Border Collie need a haircut?
This is one of the most common questions. The answer is no, clipping of Border Collies is not recommended (except for certain hygienic areas). Their coat has a protective structure that regulates body temperature and protects them from overheating or cold. A full Border Collie haircut can disrupt these functions and cause problems with new hair growth. Instead, we offer an alternative: professional combing, paw treatments, de-tangling, and grooming of sensitive areas, all to maintain your dog’s natural look without harming them.
At our salons, Border Collie grooming is with a deep understanding of the breed. We gently work with active dogs, we know how to approach them and how to make the procedures pleasant. We use only professional cosmetics, specialized tools and love for each tail. We have groomers who regularly improve their skills specifically on difficult and responsible breeds, such as Border Collie.
✅- Deep combing of the undercoat:
This is a basic and extremely important procedure for the Border Collie breed. We use specialized tools that effectively remove dead undercoat without traumatizing the top coat. This reduces shedding, prevents the formation of tangles and allows the skin to breathe.
✅- Delicate bathing with professional cosmetics:
We do not use universal shampoos - only those suitable for the double layer coat of Borderers. The cosmetics cleanse deeply but gently, preserving the natural fat balance, do not dry out the skin, do not weigh the coat down and emphasize its natural shine.
✅- Thorough drying with the right air direction:
We dry the coat in the direction of growth, using moderate temperature air to maintain structure and volume. This ensures that the wool does not pile up, remains loose, lightweight, without excess volume or inelastic waves.
✅- Treatment of hygienic areas:
Gently trim the coat under the tail, groin, between the toes and on the paw pads. This prevents the accumulation of dirt, urine, dust and prevents irritation in sensitive areas, especially for active Borderers who are constantly outdoors.
✅- Claw and paw care:
Borderers run a lot, but even their claws may not be sharpened evenly. We assess the length, angle of growth, check the condition of the pads for micro-cracks or dirt. If necessary, we apply a protective balm.
✅- Ear cleaning:
In a breed with an active lifestyle, dust, grass and skin particles often accumulate in the ears. We clean the ears with special lotions that do not irritate the mucosa and prevent inflammation, but do not disturb the natural microflora.
✅- Treatment of the eyes and the area around them:
Borderers can have minor tear production, especially in the wind or after active walks. The groomers in our network gently clean the eye area without aggressive products to prevent irritation and dark marks on the coat.
✅- Final styling and combing:
We finish the treatments with a light styling, which does not change the natural look of the dog, but emphasizes the breed. After our grooming, the Border Collie's coat looks lively, voluminous, pleasant to the touch, but without being too "doll-like".
✅- If necessary - parasite treatment or revitalizing masks:
For dogs that walk a lot in parks, forests or villages, we offer an additional tick and flea treatment. There is also the option of a nourishing mask or coat structure restoration treatment if the coat is dry or damaged.
Does a border collie need a haircut?
No, full haircutting of the Border Collie is not recommended. Their coat has a protective structure that regulates body temperature and protects them from overheating and cold. You can only trim hygienic areas (under the tail, between the toes, etc.) or lightly trim the contour.
Can a border collie still be trimmed if it is shedding heavily?
Even during the period of heavy shedding it is better not to shear, but to perform a deep combing of the undercoat. Shearing will not reduce shedding, but on the contrary, it may spoil the structure of the coat and cause problems with regrowth.
