History and origin of the breed
The Boston Terrier is a true American. But not the one with the cowboy hat, but the one with the bowtie around his neck and impeccable manners. The Boston Terrier is the first officially recognized breed bred in the United States, and that says it all. Its ancestors are English bulldogs and white terriers, but in Boston at the end of the 19th century they bred a completely new quality: a friend with the heart of an athlete, the mind of a philosopher and the look of a little dandy.
At first these dogs were bigger, more aggressive, they were even used in dog fights. But everything changed: American breeders began to work on making the former fighter a real Favorite – affectionate, cheerful and social. Already in 1893 the breed was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club, and since then the Boston Terrier is the pride of the country.
It is even called the “American Gentleman” – not only because of its innate charm, but also because of its black and white coloring, reminiscent of a tuxedo.
The Boston Terrier’s appearance, personality and lifestyle, its character and lifestyle
This is the kind of dog that knows how to wink. Big round eyes that are always up to something, a petite, muscular body, neat ears and a wide smile – the Bostonian is as if created to charm you. His weight is 6-11 kg and his height is up to 40 cm. He is small but very confident. His gait is like walking down the red carpet.
The Boston Terrier is ideal for city life. He easily adapts to the apartment, does not require marathon runs, but loves walks, active games and attention. This is a dog that plays enthusiastically with children, does not conflict with cats, understands the mood of the owner and always wants to be near. He is not the kind of dog who runs away to his corner – on the contrary, he is always close by, always ready to put his paw on your paw, cheer you up and quietly watch a TV show with you.
His character is an explosive cocktail of intelligence, playfulness, emotionality and endurance. He knows how to be funny, but not hysterical. He reacts calmly to guests, but knows who is his own. Most importantly, he genuinely loves his family, often so much that he literally follows you around.
The Boston Terrier is a dog that lives for you.
Boston Terrier grooming
Some might think, “What’s there to groom? He’s short-haired!” But this is where the most important misunderstanding lies. Boston Terrier – although smooth in appearance, but has a very sensitive skin, prone to irritations, dryness and allergic reactions. And when done right – his coat shines like a patent suit.
What do you need to know about the Bostonian’s coat?
It’s easy to ruin and hard to repair. Incorrect means – and the skin flakes, the coat becomes dull, there is itching. That’s why grooming a Boston Terrier is not just bathing, it’s a whole complex to restore and maintain balance. We use only delicate, hypoallergenic shampoos without odor or with mild natural fragrances. And conditioners are moisturizing to keep the coat soft and shiny, not prickly.
Why are regular treatments important?
Even the cleanest Boston Terrier collects dust and bacteria that can cause skin problems. That’s why we recommend regular professional treatments every 3-4 weeks: bathing, ear cleaning, claw trimming, and treating creases. Those cute little wrinkles on the muzzle are the perfect environment for moisture and dirt to accumulate. If they are not cleaned, odor, irritation, and sometimes even fungus will develop.
Eye and ear care is an essential part of a visit to the grooming salon. The Bostonian’s large eyes are prone to tearfulness, especially in the wind or during active play. And the ears, while open, can accumulate dust. All of these require gentle but regular cleaning.
Claws are another important consideration. Because of the soft soil of the urban environment, claws do not sharpen naturally. If they are not trimmed, gait changes and paw discomfort occurs. At V.O.G DOG SALON our masters know how to trim claws quickly, painlessly and stress-free.
But what about a haircut?
No, Bostons don’t need a haircut like other breeds. But a light correction of the anal area, paws, removal of excess undercoat during shedding season – it’s all important. Such things cannot be done at home, only in the hands of a professional groomer.
And most importantly: Bostons are emotional. If the groomer does not know how to read their moods correctly, if grooming is stressful and not fun, the dog will simply stop trusting. That’s why at V.O.G DOG SALON we establish a connection. And only then – turn them into a brilliant, confident gentleman.
Is a Boston Terrier right for you?
Before you get a Boston Terrier puppy, you need to answer the most important question: are you ready for a dog that will always be there for you? Because this breed is a shadow of its master. It needs emotional presence, interaction, attention. Loneliness is its main enemy.
Bostonians are not for the big yard, not for life in an enclosure. They are exclusively “house” dogs who adore the couch, cuddles, walks in the city and looks directly into the eyes. They get along very well in apartments, are easy to train, do not bark unnecessarily, and even at an older age remain playful.
As for the price of a Boston Terrier – a purebred Boston Terrier can cost from 1000 to 2500 dollars, depending on the pedigree. When choosing a puppy, pay attention to breathing (because of the short muzzle there are difficulties), activity, grooming parents.
This is a breed that is ideal for active people, families with children, those who want a fun, intelligent and sincerely loving friend.
