Cats have always seemed to us animals with an independent character, who prefer solitude and are jealous of their territory. However, despite the stereotype about their reticence, in the world of these animals friendship is not only possible, but often occurs. It manifests itself in a very special way – in quiet signals, subtle rituals and small gestures, which are well understood by the cats themselves, but require careful observation by humans.

To begin with, it is important to realize that in cats, as in humans, character plays a key role. Some are born more sociable, while others tend to be isolated. However, when two cats find common ground, it develops into a true friendship. They sleep next to each other, touch each other with their paws, exchange licking of fur, as if to confirm their affection. This is not only a display of affection, but also a way of saying “you are part of my group”. This licking ritual has a deep meaning, because the smell in the cat world is a kind of passport, and the mixing of scents indicates complete trust.

Friendship between cats is formed gradually. At first they cautiously study each other, observing from a distance, then they get closer, test boundaries and only then begin to accept a common space. It’s like a delicate dance: one step forward, two back, and only when both are ready does a strong bond form. There are cases where cats get so used to each other that they become practically inseparable, even while experiencing separation stress.

Of course, the opposite can also happen. Not every pair of cats will be able to become friends. Some remain rivals, defend the territory and avoid close contact. Here it is important that the owner does not force them to interact, but gives time and opportunity to establish their own rules of coexistence. If the character and temperament coincide, friendship becomes a natural continuation of life together.

Thus, cats are able to befriend each other, and this friendship has a special, very refined character. It is not as open and demonstrative as that of dogs, but its strength can be felt in the sharing of rest, the exchange of odors, and the quiet harmony. It’s a reminder to us humans that even independent and proud creatures need warmth, company and a sense of belonging to someone close.

P.S. I have also witnessed a true friendship between cats myself. This is a unique case. I have a street cat living near my house, who often comes to eat and rest in the sun under my window. Over time, he got a friend – the same street cat, but always near me. They started walking together as if they were each other’s shadows: they walk along the street, eat dinner next to each other, and even take vacations in sync. A lot of time has passed, and they are still inseparable. Looking at them, you realize that feline friendship exists, and it can be so strong that it becomes similar to human friendship, if not stronger.
