Cats are afraid of water – everyone seems to know that. But does that mean they can’t swim? Actually, the answer is different: almost all domestic cats have a natural ability to swim, even if they have never touched water. Their bodies are flexible and their paws are perfectly adapted for movement in water. The problem is not skill, but reluctance.
Most cats avoid water because of an aversion to wet fur, a change in body odor, and a sense of vulnerability. In water, the cat doesn’t feel like the master of the situation and this creates anxiety. However, there are exceptions. Some breeds – such as the Turkish Van, Maine Coon or Bengal cat – do not just tolerate water, but sometimes seek it out deliberately. Their fur is partially water-repellent, and their interest in the environment overcomes fear.
In the wild, many wild cats – such as tigers, fisher cats, or reed cats – are excellent swimmers. They use water to hunt or move around. Thus, the ability to swim in cats is inherited from their wild ancestors, but in domestic pets it is simply not developed – due to lack of need.
If the cat accidentally fell into the water – do not panic. The chance that it will swim independently to the shore is very high. But never force her to swim if she doesn’t want to. For most cats, water is stressful, and bathing “through force” can cause a long-lasting fear of even the sound of a faucet or bathroom.
But what about grooming?
At V.O.G DOG SALON, cat grooming is a separate story. Our groomers are well aware that most cats don’t like water, so we don’t just pick up and wash, but carefully adapt the animal to the process. No sudden movements, with warm water, caring hands and a comfortable room temperature. We use only professional hypoallergenic shampoos that do not have a pungent odor and do not harm the coat.
Everything happens without stress and fuss, and if the animal is very anxious – our groomers know how to create an atmosphere of safety: from dimmed light to slow pace of work. We introduce the cat to water in a new way, without coercion, only with respect and patience.
