Toy terriers are true miniature dogs. They combine grace, temperament, courage and boundless loyalty. Despite their small size, this dog has a very bright personality and is capable of becoming both a loud watchdog and a gentle lap dog. The average weight of the Toy Terrier ranges from 1.5 to 3 kg, and its height does not exceed 25 cm. It is a breed with expressive eyes, shapely legs, a dry body and a proud posture. The Toy Terrier breed was created to accompany nobility, and today it accompanies its owners in the modern world, remaining elegant and charming.
The first mention of Toy Terriers dates back to the 19th century, when they began to appear in Britain as an ornamental version of hunting terriers. These dogs quickly won the hearts of the upper classes thanks to their compact size, energy and refined appearance. Subsequently, the breed gained popularity around the world, and today there are several officially recognized varieties of Toy Terriers.
The term “Toy Terrier” actually covers several distinct breeds and subtypes. Each has its own characteristics:
The English Toy Terrier is a graceful dog with a smooth, shiny coat, long legs and pointed ears. It is one of the oldest members of the group. It is characterized by intelligence, restraint and good physical condition.
The Russian Toy Terrier is extremely popular in Europe. It can be both short-haired and long-haired. It has a sonorous voice, a lively disposition and a charming appearance with fluffy ears in long-haired representatives.
Mini Toy Terrier is the unofficial name for extremely small representatives of the Russian or English Toy Terrier, weighing up to 1.5 kg. They are often bred as “purse” dogs, although their temperament is not at all gentle.
The American Toy Terrier (American Toy Terrier / Toy Fox Terrier ) is a slightly larger dog with an active temperament, a more athletic body and a short coat.
TheToy Manchester Terrier is a small-to-medium sized breed with a more muscular body and smooth coat, derived from the classic terriers.
The Prague Cricket (Prazský krysařík) is a miniature breed of Czech origin that is often confused with toy terriers. It has a compact body, large eyes and highly developed intelligence.
All these breeds combine compactness, liveliness, loyalty and expressive appearance, but each has its own specific grooming requirements.
Toy Terrier is a breed that requires a special approach to everything. Due to their small size and high activity level, they need a high-quality, balanced diet rich in protein and fat. Their digestive tract is quite sensitive, so it is important to avoid sudden changes in diet and not to overfeed them – being overweight is dangerous for this breed.
The care of the coat depends on its type. For short-haired Toy Terriers, regular combing with a soft glove and occasional washing is sufficient. Long-haired dogs, on the other hand (especially Russian Toy Terriers with long ears and tail), require regular brushing, prevention of coat tussling and shearing. A haircut not only helps maintain a neat appearance, but also makes it easier to groom at home – the coat doesn’t stick together, doesn’t collect dust, and the dog feels more comfortable in the warm season. This is especially important when grooming a long-haired terrier.
In addition to the coat, claws, ears and teeth need special attention. Toy Terriers’ nails grow quickly and can cause discomfort when walking. Ears should be cleaned gently, as they are open and prone to dust accumulation. Oral hygiene is another important topic, as this breed is prone to tartar formation at a young age.
This breed is known for its longevity. With proper care, Toy Terriers live an average of 12-15 years, with many representatives even reaching 17-18 years. Regular veterinary checkups, quality food, hygienic care and an owner’s love are the recipe for a long and happy life for your pet.
Bathing and skin care :
The Toy Terrier's skin is thin, sensitive and easily irritated. Our groomers use only ultra-mild hypoallergenic cosmetics specially formulated for miniature breeds. Bathing is carried out every 2-3 weeks - this is enough to maintain cleanliness without drying out the epidermis. In the case of long-haired representatives, a coat conditioning step is added to avoid tangling and make it easier to comb. After bathing, we always apply a moisturizing spray or mild lotion to protect the skin from drying out and the coat from breaking.
Toy Terrier haircut :
Short-haired Toy Terriers do not necessarily need a full haircut, but many owners opt for a light trim for a neat appearance - under the legs, on the belly, near the eyes. Representatives of long-haired (especially Russian toy terriers) require regular body shaping: we remove excess hair from the ears, tail, legs and mold the overall line to emphasize the graceful structure of the dog. We pay special attention to the areas where the hair can get tangled - after our grooming procedures, there are no more tangles.
Ear hygiene :
Terrier's ears are like elegant "locators" that quickly pick up dust and odors, so cleaning them regularly is a must. Once every 1-2 weeks you need to clean your ears. Our masters gently clean the ears with a special product that does not irritate the delicate skin and does not cause discomfort.
Eye care :
It is due to the structure of the muzzle that the eyes are prone to tearing. Regularly wipe the eye area with alcohol-free lotions and special wipes to prevent staining and irritation.
Muzzle and teeth hygiene :
Toy Terriers often have closely spaced teeth, which contributes to the formation of plaque and tartar at a young age. At V.O.G DOG SALON, we also take care of your smile! Our masters brush your dog's teeth with fluoride-free toothpaste recommended by veterinarians and teach owners how to do it at home.
✅- Claw trimming for Toy Terrier :
These small dogs do not have the ability to rub their nails on the sidewalk like larger dogs. We trim the nails every 2-3 weeks, without waiting until they start to interfere with walking. Nail trimming is done in good light so as not to damage the pulp - we work with jeweler's precision.
Care of paws and pads :
Toy Terrier paws are miniature, delicate, sometimes even similar to "baby" paws. The pads dry out easily, especially in winter or after a walk on hot asphalt. We use special lotions that not only moisturize, but also create a protective barrier. To make every step soft and walks comfortable.
Anti-static combing and grooming :
Long-haired Toy Terriers need more than just combing - they need affection. At the salon, we use combs with a coating that doesn't injure the skin, as well as lightweight anti-static sprays that protect the coat from static, which often happens in miniature breeds with a fine coat structure.
Additional spa treatments :
We offer luxurious grooming treatments: massages to relax after stress, aromatherapy - all to make even the most demanding Toy Terrier feel like a fairy tale.
Toy terriers have sensitive skin, so frequent bathing can lead to irritation. It is recommended to bathe them no more than once every 2-3 weeks, using mild hypoallergenic shampoos. For long-haired representatives, it is also important to use conditioners to avoid tangling of the coat.
For short-haired Toy Terriers, hygienic trimming of the paws, belly and eye area is usually sufficient. For long-haired Toy Terriers, regular grooming is recommended to keep the coat looking neat and prevent tangles.
Toy terriers need a high-quality small breed food with high protein and fat content. Their digestive tract is sensitive, so it is important to avoid sudden changes in diet and control portions to prevent weight gain.
Due to their light weight, Toy Terriers do not naturally wear down their nails, so they should be trimmed every 2-3 weeks. Long claws can cause discomfort when walking and even cause paw curvature.
Toy terriers are prone to dental problems, so it is recommended to brush their teeth with a special toothpaste several times a week. Regular grooming and veterinary checks will help prevent plaque and tartar buildup.
The average lifespan of a Toy Terrier is 12-15 years. With proper care, good nutrition and regular visits to the vet, many representatives of this breed can live up to 17-18 years.
Toy terriers can be great companions for families with children, but due to their delicate body structure, it is important to teach children how to handle the dog with care to avoid accidental injuries.
Due to their low thermoregulation and lack of undercoat, Toy Terriers need warm clothing in cold weather. This will help prevent hypothermia and keep them comfortable during walks.
