Dreaming of a cozy corner of wildlife at home, but don’t know where to start? An aquarium is a whole microcosm that requires the right approach. This article will help you start your first aquarium and avoid typical mistakes.

Step-by-step instructions for starting an aquarium

Start by choosing a place – away from direct sunlight and drafts. Next, choose the volume of the aquarium: for beginners, the ideal is from 40 to 100 liters. Buy a filter, heater with thermostat, soil (not very shallow), plants (better live), lighting. Fill the aquarium with water, fill the soil, plant plants, turn on the filter and heater. And most importantly – do not run the fish on the first day! First must pass the so-called “nitrogen cycle” – 7-10 days until the aquarium formed the correct biological environment.

There is a whole natural cycle going on inside the aquarium. Fish emit ammonia, which is dangerous to themselves, but the bacteria in the filter and soil gradually convert it into less harmful substances. That’s why you need time before launching the fish. Simply put – the aquarium must “mature”. Also: do not overpopulate it. For each small fish should be 3-5 liters of water. And don’t forget: even the smallest fish are living creatures, not decoration.

How to avoid common mistakes

Beginners often start fish too early – this is the first and most common mistake. The second is the purchase of incompatible species: aggressive can attack peaceful, warm-water – can not withstand low temperatures. The third mistake – overfeeding. Fish do not eat “with reserve”, and the remnants of food rot, poisoning the water. Orient on the rule: as much food as the fish eat in 1-2 minutes. And one more thing: do not wash the decor and filter under hot water with soap – you will kill the beneficial bacteria that form a stable ecosystem.

What you need to know about care

The aquarium does not require daily intervention, but regular maintenance is mandatory. Once a week, replace 20-30% of the water with fresh water, check the temperature, clean the walls of the aquarium from algae. Once every 2-4 weeks rinse the filter sponge in water from the aquarium. Do not forget to periodically check the level of nitrates and pH – even with simple tests from the pet store.

The first aquarium is a harmony you learn by observing the life inside. The right approach and patience – and your aquarium will give you a feeling of coziness, tranquility and a touch of nature. Don’t be afraid of mistakes – every experience makes you a better aquarist.
