Origin of the breed

The Oriental cat is the result of a true experiment. It was created in the UK in the mid-20th century on the basis of the Siamese breed, adding genetic diversity with the help of Abyssinian, Russian Blue and other cats. The main idea was simple: to keep the temperament and grace of the Siamese, but allow a wider palette of coat colors. Thus came the Oriental Shorthair cat, or Oriental, one of the most artistic, emotional and elegant breeds in the world.

Oriental appearance

It cannot be confused with any other breed. Orientals have a long, slender body with high paws, an elongated neck and a tassel-like tail. Their head is wedge-shaped, with huge ears that emphasize every emotion, and their eyes are almond-shaped, often of a deep green or blue color. Their coat is short, shiny, tightly fitted to the body, and there is no undercoat. Thanks to this, Orientals look like glossy statuettes – their movements are smooth, plastic, and their gaze is piercing. Their color palette is incredible: more than 300 shades, from monochrome to tabby, smoky and bicolor.

Character of the Oriental Shorthair cat

These are cats that don’t hide their emotions. They talk – literally. Orientals are very loud, love to socialize and won’t shut up if they want attention. They need interaction. They become attached to one person, can be jealous, accompany their owner from room to room, participate in conversations, actions, and sometimes in meetings. Their intelligence is amazing: they easily open doors, look for ways to get to treats, play like dogs, and sometimes even learn commands. The Oriental kitten is especially easy to train while it is still small (up to 10 months old).

Grooming an Oriental cat

Despite their short hair, grooming of Orientals requires attention and tenderness. Their skin is very sensitive, easily over-dried or soiled, so regular bathing with mild hypoallergenic shampoos is required. The lack of undercoat reduces shedding, but it is the coat of luster that requires additional polishing with special wipes and combs. Special attention should be paid to the ears – they are large, open and quickly accumulate dirt. Orientals’ eyes sometimes get watery, so grooming includes delicate cleaning of eyelids. Health and longevity

This is a breed that, with proper care, lives a long life – on average 14-16 years, and often longer. But Orientals have their vulnerabilities: because of their kinship with Siams, they can be prone to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, liver disease, dental and digestive problems. They are very sensitive to cold and stress. Therefore, grooming, proper nutrition, regular check-ups at the veterinarian and emotional comfort are a must in the life of this gentle graceful creature.
