Oriental cat grooming in Kiev

Delicate care for graceful forms: professional Oriental grooming at V.O.G DOG SALON

Origin of the breed

The Oriental cat is the result of a true experiment. It was created in the UK in the mid-20th century on the basis of the Siamese breed, adding genetic diversity with the help of Abyssinian, Russian Blue and other cats. The main idea was simple: to keep the temperament and grace of the Siamese, but allow a wider palette of coat colors. Thus came the Oriental Shorthair cat, or Oriental, one of the most artistic, emotional and elegant breeds in the world.

Oriental appearance

It cannot be confused with any other breed. Orientals have a long, slender body with high paws, an elongated neck and a tassel-like tail. Their head is wedge-shaped, with huge ears that emphasize every emotion, and their eyes are almond-shaped, often of a deep green or blue color. Their coat is short, shiny, tightly fitted to the body, and there is no undercoat. Thanks to this, Orientals look like glossy statuettes – their movements are smooth, plastic, and their gaze is piercing. Their color palette is incredible: more than 300 shades, from monochrome to tabby, smoky and bicolor.

Character of the Oriental Shorthair cat

These are cats that don’t hide their emotions. They talk – literally. Orientals are very loud, love to socialize and won’t shut up if they want attention. They need interaction. They become attached to one person, can be jealous, accompany their owner from room to room, participate in conversations, actions, and sometimes in meetings. Their intelligence is amazing: they easily open doors, look for ways to get to treats, play like dogs, and sometimes even learn commands. The Oriental kitten is especially easy to train while it is still small (up to 10 months old).

Grooming an Oriental cat

Despite their short hair, grooming of Orientals requires attention and tenderness. Their skin is very sensitive, easily over-dried or soiled, so regular bathing with mild hypoallergenic shampoos is required. The lack of undercoat reduces shedding, but it is the coat of luster that requires additional polishing with special wipes and combs. Special attention should be paid to the ears – they are large, open and quickly accumulate dirt. Orientals’ eyes sometimes get watery, so grooming includes delicate cleaning of eyelids. At V.O.G DOG SALON we know all the nuances of this breed – our masters work with Orientals confidently, calmly and always adjust to the character of a particular animal.

Health and longevity

This is a breed that, with proper care, lives a long life – on average 14-16 years, and often longer. But Orientals have their vulnerabilities: because of their kinship with Siams, they can be prone to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, liver disease, dental and digestive problems. They are very sensitive to cold and stress. Therefore, grooming, proper nutrition, regular check-ups at the veterinarian and emotional comfort are a must in the life of this gentle graceful creature.

6 reasons to enroll your Oriental cat in V.O.G DOG SALONs

The fine, delicate coat requires delicate grooming:
The Oriental cat has a short, very dense and shiny coat with no undercoat, which easily loses its luster without professional grooming. It is easily damaged by rough tools or the wrong shampoo, so it is important to choose only the best salons for your pet.
It is important to maintain skin hygiene:
Their thin skin is sensitive to dirt and oiliness. Regular washing with the right products helps to avoid irritations and rashes. In the salon, we use gentle cleansers that do not dry the skin and restore its natural balance.
The specific body shape requires experienced hands:
The Oriental cat has graceful contours, long paws and neck, all of which require careful attention and the ability to hold the animal without stress. Our groomers know how to hold and support an Oriental so that it doesn't get nervous or lash out.
Eye and ear safety is our priority:
Orientals are prone to copious tear production, and large ears require regular cleaning, which we perform as gently as possible. We perform a thorough cleaning without discomfort to the animal, using sterile instruments and safe lotions.
Minimizing shedding and allergens:
A set of salon treatments significantly reduces the amount of hair in the home and helps reduce allergens. After treatments at our salons, the coat is clean, smooth and virtually shed-free - making life at home much easier.
Stress - no, comfort - yes:
Our groomers have experience specifically with Oriental cats. We understand their emotional nature, and everything in the salon - from the hands to the atmosphere - promotes calmness. Each cat has its own pace and personality, and we always adjust to them to make grooming a gentle and enjoyable experience.

Claw clipping:
We trim the claws with special clippers with a limiter, without pain or stress. This step is carried out quickly and carefully to avoid cutting or traumatizing the sensitive part of the claw.

Scrubbing:
After claw clipping, delicate combing is done with special soft combs. This helps to remove dust, skin particles, dead hairs and activate microcirculation. It is important to avoid hard brushes for Orientals, as their skin is very thin and sensitive.

Bathing with hypoallergenic shampoo:
Orientals have open skin with no undercoat, so water penetrates it quickly. We only use mild shampoos without harsh surfactants, specially formulated for short-haired breeds. This helps to preserve the skin's protective barrier, avoid irritations and restore the coat's natural shine.

Nourishing conditioner or balm:
A light conditioner is applied after shampooing to make the coat even silkier, reduce electrification and prevent dryness. The Oriental coat is fine and shiny, and this step gives it the perfect look without weighing it down.

Ear Cleaning:
Because of their large open ears, Orientals quickly accumulate wax and dust. At the salon, we perform a professional cleaning without pain or risk of damage. We use special lotions that cleanse and disinfect without drying out the skin.

Eye cleaning:
Oriental cats often have a tendency to tear, so eye cleaning is a must. We clean up tear tracks, prevent coat stains, and take care of eye health without using alcohol-based products.

Popular questions owners have about Orientals and their answers:

Сірий орієнтал з зеленими очима простягнув лапу до чорнобривців

How often should an Oriental cat be combed out?

Orientals are short-haired, so once a week is enough to remove dead hair and stimulate the skin. During shedding - spring and fall - you can increase to 2-3 times a week.

Do they need bathing if they wash themselves?

Although the Oriental cat is well groomed, bathing is required every 4-6 weeks or less frequently unless there are allergies or heavy soiling. At the salon, we use mild shampoos to avoid drying out the sensitive skin.

Is it true that Orientals hardly shed and are suitable for allergy sufferers?

Yes, Oriental cats are a low allergenic breed, consuming less Fel d1, a protein caused by allergies. But they are not completely hypoallergenic - it is important to keep clean weekly and clean the house frequently

How to care for Orientals' ears and eyes?

Large ears accumulate wax quickly - clean them guiltily with wipes once a week. Cats' eyes sometimes water - gently mop up tear streams with non-greasy wet wipes to prevent staining and irritation.

How often should the claws be trimmed?

The claws should be trimmed every 10-14 days. This is done with special clippers with a stopper at the V.O.G DOG SALON - in the safest and calmest way possible.

How do you feed an oriental?

A balanced diet high in protein is recommended - dry and wet food with AAFCO labeling. Orientals are energetic and prone to weight gain, so it is important to dose portions and avoid overeating.

Are they suitable for people with allergies?

Because of its short coat and lower Fel d 1 allergen levels, this breed is considered low allergenic, but not completely. Regular brushing and wet wiping reduces allergens in the home.

Do Oriental cats need a lot of activity?

Yes - they are an energetic, inquisitive breed. They need toys, climbing, exercise, love leash walks, clicker training and puzzles. Without activity they can become irritable.
