Peculiarities of the Pomeranian Spitz’s coat

The coat of the Pomeranian Spitz is its main pride and at the same time the main difficulty in care. It consists of a dense undercoat and long hairs, which creates the effect of a “fluffy ball”. This structure is extremely sensitive to improper haircuts. If the pin hairs are cut short or the undercoat structure is destroyed with a machine, the coat can lose volume, start to pile up or even fail to recover. This is especially dangerous for adult male dogs with an already formed coat. Haircutting a Spitz requires an understanding of hair anatomy and experience with this particular breed.

The most popular styles of Spitz haircuts

The same dog can look either like a fluffy fairy tale fox or a round-eyed stuffed toy. The most popular style is the “chanterelle” style. This haircut leaves the natural length of the coat, emphasizes the elongated nose, graceful paws, clear back and fluffy tail, which beautifully lays down in a ring. It preserves the anatomical features of the breed and does not harm the undercoat. It is this shape that makes the coat look well-groomed.

Many fall in love with the “teddy bear” style – when the Spitz is cut in such a way that its silhouette becomes maximally rounded. The head is shaped like a soft ball, the paws look like plush cylinders, and the tail is a fluffy ball. But this form is the most risky: if you overdo the length, the wool can change the structure and can no longer recover. Therefore, it is performed only with scissors and only on wool that has a dense undercoat and healthy throughout the length.

Creative haircuts are also gaining popularity among Spitzes. They are not made aggressive, as in some show poodles. Everything is very gentle: shaped hair trimming in the form of a “mane lion”, a heart on the back, cute patterns on the hips or collar. Sometimes they add coloring of the tail or ears – with safe pigments for animals. This is a whole other level: for those who want a real embodiment of the dog’s character in his appearance. But even here, the groomer must know exactly what he’s doing: not to use a full-length machine, not to “shave” the coat down to the undercoat, and not to disturb the natural growth of hair.

A proper haircut is always a delicate hand job. The main tool is scissors. The machine can be used only on the paws or for the hygienic area. Only in the hands of an experienced craftswoman, even the simplest haircut can be turned into a work of art – without harm to the coat, health and character of the dog.

How to choose a haircut without harming your dog’s health: tips from groomers

Never cut a Spitz completely “to the ground” – even in the summer. Their coat not only beautifies them, but also protects their skin from overheating and sunburn. Spitz haircut should be delicate – keep the length at least 2-3 cm. Choose a salon where there is experience working specifically with Pomeranian Spitzes – after all, this is a breed with a special structure of hair and behavior. Before the haircut, discuss the style with the groomer, show examples, talk about how your Spitz behaves – whether it reacts calmly to touch, whether there are allergies or skin problems. And most importantly, don’t try to shear it yourself at home: even a little damage to the coat can cost your spitz years of recovery. The best choice is the gentle, precise hands of an experienced handyman who knows how to accentuate the beauty of this unique breed without harming it.
