Let’s talk about a breed of cat that is perfect for those people who are looking for a loyal, intelligent and gentle furry friend. Cats of this particular breed become ideal pets due to their affection, intelligence and ability to adapt to the way of life of the family.

And we will talk about the breed of cats Korat.

History of origin

Certain breeds of cats stand out not only for their appearance, but also for the interesting history of their origin, which is rich in legends. One such species is the Korat, a breed originating from Thailand. It is believed to have been invented more than 700 years ago, and today it is recognized as the oldest cat breed in the whole world. The Thais believed that the Korat brings good luck, and so from ancient times have given it extreme importance. This is because in Thai tradition there is a belief that korats cannot be bought or sold, but only allowed to be given as a symbol of sincerity and prosperity. That is why the export of korats was banned until 1959 and they were only brought to other countries in the middle of the 20th century.

Despite such beliefs, in modern Thailand tourists can buy a korat, although formally it would be considered a gift. The buyer is asked to provide a token amount of money for the cat, which is actually agreed upon in advance. The Thais believe that in this way they do not violate tradition. By the way, among themselves they still preserve the custom of giving korats as a sign of special respect, and call this breed “Si-sawat”, which means “happiness of blue color” in Thai . This is an allusion to the noble gray-blue coloring of these cats.

In the Western world, the Korat appeared not so long ago, namely in 1959, after the American cat breeder Jeanie Johnson received as a gift from her husband this exotic pair of cats, which he brought from Thailand. This is what started the spread of Korats outside their homeland, first in the United States and later, since 1972, in Europe. Today, this cat breed is recognized by all major international felinological organizations, and the extremely fascinating story of the Korats’ origin and their attractive appearance continues to attract the attention of new fans all over the world.

Appearance

Korat is a medium-sized cat with a refined body structure and harmoniously developed muscles. His height is 25-30 cm and his weight reaches 3-5 kg. Has large amber-green eyes, which seem hypnotizing, and silver-blue coat color, which is quite peculiar among cats. Korat ears are large and have soft tips, the muzzle is very expressive, and the voice is quiet and melodious. They seem to speak with mimicry, which allows them to easily establish emotional contact with a person. Also, these cats are considered affectionate and sensitive to changes in the mood of the owner, to whom they are very attached.

Their life expectancy is 10-15 years, although under such conditions as good care, quality nutrition and veterinary support, cats can enjoy life and please their owners much longer.

Character of the korat

Korat is a cat that has such a trait as dignity and displays it in his every graceful movement and interaction with people around him. He is very attached to his owners, affectionate with them, very fond of spending time together, actively playing or lying quietly on their laps. At the same time he is not annoying, very intelligent and attentive.

Korats are patient and therefore get along well with children and other pets, have good hunting instincts and love to explore. These cats have a gentle nature, but they also make it clear what they want or what they are dissatisfied with, all through the different intonations of their voice.

Health

This breed of cat is characterized by strong health precisely due to natural selection without human intervention. They are hardy and do not have most of the hereditary diseases inherent in artificially bred breeds. The only known genetic defect may be Chapelle’s dysplasia, which causes a violation in the formation of the bone system. But the frequency of this disease is extremely low – less than 1%.

In addition, because of their origin from tropical climates and the lack of undercoat, Korats are sensitive to wind and cold. Therefore, it is important to keep them in a warm, draft-free home.

Care and conditions

Care of the Korat’s coat is easy because it is soft and short. This cat breed does not need frequent combing due to the lack of undercoat, so it is sufficient to use a soft comb or grooming glove once every two weeks to remove dead hairs. In this way you can maintain the attractive appearance of the cat’s coat.

As with other cat breeds, it is important to trim the claws regularly, once every two weeks, to avoid excessive grinding or injury. It is also important to bathe cats periodically, once a month, and clean their eyes and ears with cotton balls.

Special attention should be paid to the quality nutrition of these cats, which is a key role in maintaining their health, longevity and good appearance. It is worth choosing food that is balanced in proteins, fats, minerals and vitamins, it can be ready-made food, dry and wet, or natural food.

Korats really need daily activity and moving games to stay healthy and happy, and to avoid weight problems. It is also necessary to have systematic preventive check-ups with a veterinarian to detect possible abnormalities in time.
