Odis is a unique Ukrainian breed of ornamental dogs, bred in 2004 in Odessa. It is based on small ornamental breeds, which gave Odis their soft character, compact size and harmonious appearance. The breed is still rare, officially recognized only at the national level, so each representative of the breed is valued for its neatness of forms and friendly disposition. Odis has a neat, proportional body structure, expressive eyes, compact muzzle and long, soft, wavy hair, which forms the basis for various variants of haircuts.

Adult Odis dogs usually weigh between 3 and 6 kg, and their height ranges from 25-30 cm. They look like small plush toy dogs with graceful facial features and lively eyes. The coat is long, soft, silky, sometimes with slight waviness – very similar to the Maltese Bolognese, but more dense. It does not molt in the classical sense, but grows constantly, so it requires regular attention.

The character and behavior of odis

Odys are extremely affectionate, fun-loving, and people-oriented dogs. They are easy to train, live well in an apartment, love to be near their owner and get along well with children. Their character is calm, gentle, without excessive hyperactivity, but with a great love for games and walks. It is a companion dog that creates coziness in the house and always stays close to its people.

Care and grooming

Do odis need a haircut and how often?

Yes, an Odys coat does need regular clipping, as it grows constantly and without care, it will quickly pile up into tangles. The best interval is every 4-6 weeks. This helps to keep the coat healthy, avoids hairballs, maintains a good body shape, and keeps the dog looking aesthetically pleasing.

How to shear an Odis?

Shearing an Odis should be delicate, as the coat is very soft, silky and easily tangled. Most often groomers use:

  • scissors for shaping the body, paws, muzzle;

  • a machine with long attachments for smoothing lines;

  • filing scissors for soft transitions.

Popular variants of haircuts:

  • The classic “puppy” shape with rounded legs and a short muzzle;

  • anelongated body with a fluffier head;

  • teddy style for a more toy-like appearance;

  • full short haircut if owners prefer a shorter version.

Can odis be shaved naked?

Not recommended. A full shave can change the coat texture, making it brittle, dull and less silky. In addition, the skin of these ornamental breeds is very delicate, so shaving can cause irritation or sunburn. If the coat is in a neglected state and is all in tangles – the groomer sometimes has to take off short, but this is an extreme case.
