The Papillon is a small ornamental breed with a graceful bone, light body and characteristic large ears with long silky hair, which gave the breed its name (from the French papillon – “butterfly”). The height at the withers is usually 20-28 cm, weight – about 2.5-5 kg. Despite its compact size, it is a perky, intelligent and very attentive dog with a lively temperament and high trainability.
The average life expectancy of the Papillon is 13-16 years. The breed is considered to be quite healthy, but because of its diminutiveness it requires caution in the home: controlling weight, teeth and knee joints is important. Papillons are active, love movement, quickly become attached to the owner and are well adapted to both apartment life and traveling.
The main feature of the breed is a long, thin, silky coat without a thick undercoat. It tangles easily in the ear area, behind the paws and under the arms. Regular brushing is necessary, but it is not enough to maintain a neat appearance. The Papillon needs a delicate hygienic haircut, shaping of the paws, under the tail and length correction in areas where the coat hinders movement or accumulates dirt.
Haircutting the Papillon is all about maintaining the natural lightness and airiness of the coat. The wrong approach can ruin the texture and unbalance the silhouette. That’s why grooming this breed requires care, precision and an understanding of its anatomy.
At V.O.G DOG SALON, Papillon haircuts are customized to the breed standard and lifestyle of the dog. Our groomers work to ensure that the Papillon looks neat, harmonious and retains its natural elegance without overloading the coat.

Bathing with properly selected cosmetics:
For the Papillon, it is important not to overload the coat and not to dry out the skin. Professional cosmetics for long-haired breeds are used, which cleans delicately, maintains shine and does not make the coat heavy. After washing, a light conditioning product is applied to facilitate combing.
Professional combing and untangling:
Most often, tangles form behind the ears, under the paws, in the groin area and on the "pants". Unraveling should be done gradually and gently, without sudden movements, so as not to traumatize the fine hair or cause pain. Regular salon combing prevents the formation of dense tangles that have to be cut off.
Length correction and contouring:
The Papillon is not cut short, as its long coat forms the breed's silhouette. However, length correction is necessary. The hair on the paws is trimmed, a neat foot contour is formed, and the area between the pads is treated. The hair in the groin area and under the tail is delicately shortened to maintain cleanliness.
At the owner's request it is possible to lightly shorten the body in a homemade format - without disturbing the texture and without losing the natural lightness of the breed.
Eye area care and prevention of tear tracks:
Papillons, due to the small size of the muzzle and the peculiarities of the eye structure, often have tear ducts. They quickly form dark tracks on the light-colored coat, which spoil the appearance and can irritate the skin. During grooming, the eye area is gently cleaned with professional products that do not sting or dry out the skin.
Ear shaping - preserving the breed trait:
Papillon's ears with long silky coat are his main feature. During grooming, the coat is gently combed and shaped to emphasize the "butterfly" look without reducing volume or distorting the shape.
Claw and paw care:
Regular claw trimming is essential for proper paw placement and comfortable movement. Treatment of the fur between the pads prevents dirt accumulation and slipping on the floor.
Cleaning of the ears and monitoring of the skin condition:
Delicate cleaning of the ear canal with special products is performed. During each visit, the condition of the skin is evaluated to detect dryness, irritation or other changes in time.
No. Complete shaving of the coat is not recommended as it has a protective function against the sun and overheating. A light trimming in a home format is allowed, but not a radical reduction in length.
On average every 3 to 4 weeks. Fine wool quickly loses its luster without regular washing, and dust accumulation contributes to tangling.
Due to the fine structure of the hair. Most often, tangles form behind the ears, under the paws and in the area of rubbing against clothing or harnesses. Regular brushing and salon grooming will prevent dense tangles.
Undesirable, even in summer. Natural drying leads to tangling and loss of coat smoothness. Proper drying produces an even, shiny texture.
This may be due to the anatomy, nutrition or sensitivity of the eyes. Regular cleansing of the eye area can help maintain a tidy appearance and reduce irritation. But remember to always look for the root cause.
Yes. Correction of the fur around the paws and between the pads ensures cleanliness after walks and better stability on slippery surfaces.
The Papillon does not have a dense undercoat, so it does not shed en masse like Spitzes or Collies. However, this does not mean that the hair does not fall out at all. Dead hairs remain in the general mass, especially in the area of the ears, "pants" and under the paws. Without regular brushing, they accumulate, which gradually leads to tangling. This is why even with moderate shedding, the breed needs systematic grooming.
Household shampoos have a different pH level and do not take into account the peculiarities of the dog's skin. They can dry out the fine hair of the Papillon, making it brittle and dull. In addition, improper cosmetics upset the balance of the skin, which can cause itching or irritation. For long-haired ornamental breeds, professional products are used that cleanse gently and preserve the natural shine of the coat.
It is optimal to introduce the Papillon to salon care at the age of 3-4 months in a light format: bathing, drying, careful combing and minimal correction. Early positive experience helps to form a calm attitude to procedures in adulthood. If the first visit is delayed too long, the dog may react warily or nervously.
Home combing is important, but it is not a substitute for professional grooming. The salon performs deep cleansing of the coat, proper drying with hair pulling, contour correction and treatment of areas that are difficult for the owner to reach. It is the comprehensive approach that allows you to keep the silkiness, shape and neat appearance of the papillon for a long time.
