Riesenschnauzer – the largest representative of the group of schnauzers, a dog with a powerful physique, high intelligence and a pronounced service temperament. It is a breed that is created for work, protection and active life near a person. Its appearance immediately attracts attention: a massive head with a characteristic beard and thick eyebrows, deep chest, strong back and confident posture. The Riesenschnauzer looks collected, strong and very focused – there are no casual features.
The Riesenschnauzer is one of the larger breeds. Adult male dogs are usually 65-70 cm tall at the withers, while bitches are slightly shorter – about 60-65 cm. Weight ranges from 35-50 kg depending on sex and fitness. It is a muscular, well-built dog without being overly massive, but with pronounced strength. Its body is well-proportioned, its movements are supple and energetic, and its overall silhouette emphasizes its endurance and working potential.
The Riesenschnauzer is a dog for a confident owner. It is highly intelligent, quick to learn, memorizes commands and needs regular intellectual exercise. It is not a breed for a passive life. Without work or activity, the Riesenschnauzer becomes bored, and boredom in such a breed quickly turns into stubbornness.
At the same time, it is an extremely loyal and deeply attached to the family dog. It is attentive to the mood of the owner, gets along well with children in the family, but always retains guarding wariness to strangers. Aggression is not peculiar to it without reason, but the protective instinct is developed very strongly. This is a dog that acts when it really needs to.
On average, the Riesenschnauzer lives 10-13 years, which is a good indicator for a large breed. With proper nutrition, exercise and regular veterinary check-ups, it remains active and sturdy until a venerable age. It is important to monitor the condition of the joints, as the heavy weight puts a strain on the musculoskeletal system. The skin should also be monitored, as irritations can occur if not properly cared for.
Regular examinations and prevention of parasites are the basic conditions for a long and healthy life of this breed.
The Riesenschnauzer has a stiff, wire-like coat with a dense undercoat. It is this structure that is the specialty of the breed. His coat does not shed in the classic way that most dogs do. The dead hair does not fall out on its own, but remains in the coat. If it is not removed correctly, the coat loses its stiffness, becomes dull, starts to fall off, and the skin stops “breathing”.
That is why a Riesenschnauzer needs professional trimming, not ordinary grooming and not a simple clipping with a machine. Trimming is a procedure of manual removal of dead stiff hair, which allows to keep the correct structure of the coat, its rich color and natural stiffness. If the coat is shaved with a machine, it becomes soft, fluffy, loses its breed appearance and protective properties.
In addition to trimming, it is important to properly design the beard, eyebrows and body silhouette, because it is these elements that form the characteristic image of the Riesenschnauzer. Professional grooming emphasizes musculature, clean lines and makes the dog well-groomed and presentable.
At V.O.G DOG SALON our groomers work with hard-coated breeds professionally, taking into account the anatomy and standard of the Riesenschnauzer. Professional Riesenschnauzer trimming (hand plucking):
This is the main procedure for the Riesenschnauzer. During trimming, the dead stiff hair that does not fall out naturally is removed. This renews the coat, preserving its stiffness, rich color and proper texture. Trimming allows the skin to breathe, reduces the risk of irritations and maintains the breed's appearance.
We perform both full trimming and maintenance trimming of the Riesenschnauzer, which allows you to maintain a neat appearance without abrupt transitions in coat length.
Shaping the breed's silhouette:
The Riesenschnauzer has a distinct body geometry. At registration we emphasize depth of a breast, straightness of a back, correct length of paws. The neck is worked out separately to make the silhouette look strong and harmonious. Correction is carried out taking into account the breed standard and anatomy of a particular dog.
Beard and eyebrows shaping:
The beard and eyebrows are the "face" of the Riesenschnauzer. We carefully shape the line of eyebrows to emphasize the expressiveness of the look, remove excessive volume without disturbing the natural density. The beard is smoothed, cleaned, treated with professional cosmetics to avoid odor and stiffness after drying.
Bathing with professional cosmetics for stiff coats:
We use special shampoos that do not soften the coat. It is important for the Riesenschnauzer not to lose stiffness, so cosmetics are individually selected. After washing, care is applied that does not weigh down the hair and does not change its structure. The coat is dried properly, without overheating the skin.
Deep combing of the undercoat:
Before and after trimming, a thorough combing out of the undercoat is carried out. This helps to avoid hair piling, improves air circulation near the skin and reduces the risk of dermatological problems. This is especially important during periods of seasonal change.
Hygienic treatment:
At V.O.G DOG SALON the Riesenschnauzer is given all the necessary hygiene treatments:
- cleaning of the ears and checking the condition of the skin inside them
- careful treatment of the eye area
- trimming the hair between the pads of the paws
- correction of the length of the nails, taking into account the weight of the dog
- treatment of the intimate area to maintain cleanliness
SPA skin care:
For dogs with sensitive skin or after improper grooming, we offer restorative programs. These include deep cleansing, moisturizing and skin soothing products. This is especially important for Riesenschnauzers, who have previously been shaved regularly with a machine.
Full trimming is usually done every 3-4 months, depending on the rate of coat growth. If the dog is not a show dog, it is possible to maintain the shape by rolling - regular selective removal of dead hair every 4-6 weeks. It is by being systematic that the correct coat texture can be maintained.
Shearing a Riesenschnauzer with a machine is physically shearing, but it is wrong for the breed. At V.O.G DOG SALON we do not recommend or practice full body shaving with a machine because it destroys the structure of the hard coat. After the machine the coat becomes soft, loses depth of color and breed appearance, and it is difficult and time-consuming to bring it back to the correct condition.
Not if the procedure is performed correctly and on time. The dead hair is removed without pain. Unpleasant sensations may only occur if the hair is overexposed or the procedure is performed without experience.
This breed does not shed in the classic sense. The dead hair stays in the coat, so without trimming it builds up. This is why Riesenschnauzers appear to be "non-shedding", but in fact they just need proper grooming.
The beard needs regular cleansing after meals and walks. In the salon we not only shape it, but also clean it deeply with professional products to avoid odor and stiffness.
Home grooming is possible, but full trimming is difficult without experience. The dog's large size, dense, stiff coat and need for proper silhouette make professional grooming much safer and more effective.
The procedures should be taught from an early age. The first light hygiene treatment can be done as early as puppyhood to get the dog used to table, drying and paw treatment.
Yes, and this is important. Large breeds are prone to plaque and tartar buildup. Even if your dog is active and chews hard treats, this is no substitute for a professional cleaning. A hygienic dental cleaning at the salon can help reduce plaque, freshen breath, and maintain healthy gums. Regular preventive care greatly reduces the risk of inflammation and premature tooth loss.
Because of the weight and activity of the Riesenschnauzer, correct claw length is critical. Claws that are too long change the paw stance, put additional stress on the joints and can lead to discomfort when moving. On average, claws need to be corrected every 3-4 weeks, depending on how much they are naturally shaped. In a salon, the procedure is performed carefully, without the risk of traumatizing the vessel.
