Description, origin and features of the breed

Sharpei is one of the oldest Chinese dog breeds, whose history goes back more than two thousand years. Their images were found on clay statuettes from the Han Dynasty. The name “Sharpei” means “sandy skin”, which is due to the special structure of the coat – hard, prickly to the touch, like sandpaper.

This breed strikes with its unusual appearance: a massive head, small triangular ears, deep folds of skin, especially expressive in puppies. The bluish-purple tongue is another characteristic feature that unites the Sharpei with another famous Chinese breed, the Chow Chow.

Historically, Sharpeys were used as guard and hunting dogs, as well as in dogfighting. Their wrinkled skin had a practical value: in the event of an attack by another animal, it protected the internal organs, because even when bitten, a Sharpei could twist and counterattack.

The size of the Sharpei is average:

  • Height at the withers: 44-51 cm.

  • Weight: 18-25 kg.

  • Live an average of 10-12 years.

There are several varieties of Sharpei by coat type:

  • Horse coat – short, stiff, the most traditional.

  • Brush coat – slightly longer and softer.

  • Bear coat – a rare type, with a longer coat, not officially recognized by standards, but very attractive to owners.

Care and grooming of the Shar-Pei

Grooming of this breed has its own peculiarities, because the unique skin and coat of the Shar-Pei requires a special approach.

Coat

The Sharpie has a short coat with no undercoat, so they hardly shed and do not need frequent haircuts. They should not be shaved, as the coat has a protective function. It is enough to comb the dog once a week with a special brush with soft teeth to remove dead hair and stimulate blood circulation.

Skin folds

The Sharpei’s biggest feature is its wrinkled skin. It is this that requires careful care: moisture, dust and bacteria accumulate in the creases, which can cause irritation, fungal infections or unpleasant odor. The owner should regularly inspect the folds, wipe them gently with damp cloths or a soft cloth and dry them thoroughly. Particular attention should be paid to the muzzle and neck, where the folds are most pronounced.

Bathing

Sharpie should be bathed once every 1.5-2 months or when necessary, using shampoos for dogs with sensitive skin. It is very important to dry the coat and skin well after bathing, as residual moisture in the folds is the main cause of dermatological problems.

Eyes and ears

Due to their specific skin structure, Sharpeys are prone to eyelid drooping (entropion), so the eyes should be regularly inspected and cleaned of secretions. The ears are small and tightly fitted to the head, so moisture and impurities often occur inside. Regular cleaning with ear lotions is a must.

Claws and teeth

The Shar-Pei’s nails grow quickly and need trimming every 2-3 weeks. Teeth should be brushed with a special dog toothpaste at least twice a week, as this breed is prone to oral problems.

Thus, Sharpei grooming does not require haircuts or complicated procedures, but it does require systematic and attentive care of folds and sensitive areas. This is the key to a healthy and good looking dog.

The character of the sharpei

The Sharpei is a dog with a strong character that combines independence and loyalty. They are naturally wary of strangers and perfectly fulfill the role of guards. However, with the owner and his family, Sharpeys are very affectionate and even gentle.

They are smart, but stubborn: if a Sharpei decided to do something in his own way, it is not easy to change his mind. That is why this breed needs consistent training from an early age, a clear understanding of the “rules of the game” and socialization.

Sharpei are not too active and usually do not require excessive physical exertion, but love walks and games in the fresh air. They can be called “dogs of one master” – they choose the leader of the family and are most attached to him.

They are calm, dignified dogs that combine exotic appearance, guarding instinct and balanced character.

Conclusion

Sharpei is a unique breed that surprises with its history, unusual appearance and character. They do not need frequent haircuts, but their skin and folds require special care. This is a dog for those who are ready to devote time to care and education, because in return, the Sharpei gives loyalty, protection and true friendship.
