Bulldog skin: sensitive and prone to irritation
Bulldogs have a special skin – delicate, thin and very delicate. It is often prone to irritation, dryness, flaking or, on the contrary, excessive oiliness. Because of this vulnerability, it is important not to use ordinary shampoos, even those that are suitable for other breeds. And “human” products are out of the question – they instantly dry out the skin, disturb its pH-balance and provoke even more discomfort.
A professional groomer always starts with an examination: if there is redness, dandruff or flaking, a special cosmetic with soft ingredients is chosen. In some cases, not just cleansing, but soothing or antiseptic baths are required. And the most important thing is a thorough rinse, as the residues of the product on the skin of the bulldog can cause allergies. Grooming for a bulldog is not a cosmetic procedure, but a real SPA-rehabilitation for sensitive skin.
Creases
Bulldog folds are the highlight of the appearance, which is a delight. But they are the ones that require the most attention in care. Between the folds accumulate moisture, saliva, dust, food particles, and in this “warm and moist environment” instantly develop bacteria. Bad odor, itching, inflammation and even infections are possible typical problems if the creases are not cleaned daily.
Ideally, at home they should be wiped daily with a soft cloth or cotton pad and then gently dried (with a dry cloth or even with a hair dryer on the lowest setting). When grooming in our salons, we use gentle antiseptic products that cleanse, moisturize and yet do not dry out the skin. We do not rub the folds aggressively or forcefully – this not only hurts the dog, but also provokes microfractures. Delicacy and care are the main rules of treatment of each fold of the bulldog.
Where odor comes from and how to avoid it
Odor in bulldogs is a separate topic that every owner knows. Often its cause is not one, but a whole bunch: residual moisture in the folds, oily skin, poorly cleaned ears, sebaceous glands or even improper drying after bathing the bulldog. It’s especially dangerous when a dog is washed at home and then only lightly blotted with a towel. The bulldog has a dense, massive structure, and the coat retains moisture longer, especially in the folds, on the belly and in the area under the tail. And moisture left on the skin quickly becomes a source of odor, itching and bacteria.
A professional groomer knows that a bulldog after a bath – it needs a real drying with control of every centimeter. It is important to dry not only on top, but also inside the folds, under the arms, on the muzzle, where moisture can persist longer. Also at grooming, the most frequently smelled areas are treated – around the ears, the folds, the under tail area. And, of course, if there is a problem with the paraanal glands – this is definitely identified and treated if necessary or the client is recommended to consult a veterinarian.
