The Thai Ridgeback is one of the rarest and oldest breeds in the world, originating from Thailand. Its history goes back more than 400 years, when these dogs were kept for guarding, hunting and escorting travelers. A special feature of the Ridgeback is the unique “ribbon” of fur on its back, which grows backwards to form intricate patterns. This trait is believed to be the result of the Creator’s design, as only a few breeds of dogs in the world have this feature.
Outwardly, the Thai Ridgeback is an elegant, harmoniously built dog with a strong body and expressive muscles. Its coat is short, shiny and extremely smooth, and comes in different colors: blue (the most valuable), red, black or isabella. Its eyes are almond-shaped, intelligent and wary, and its ears are standing and pointed, giving it an attentive and focused look.
The size of the dog is average: the height at the withers is 51-61 cm and the weight ranges from 20 to 35 kg. Despite its gracefulness, the Ridgeback is extremely hardy, fast and flexible. Its body is adapted for jumping and running, because historically it was used for hunting small game and even snakes.
Thai Ridgeback grooming and hair and coat care
The Thai Ridgeback is one of those breeds that doesn’t need complicated grooming, but grooming remains an important part of his life. Its coat is short, with no undercoat, so the dog does not shed as intensely as other breeds. This makes it convenient for keeping in an apartment. However, a few peculiarities should be taken into account.
Firstly, the Thai Ridgeback’s coat is smooth and tight to the body, so regular brushing with a soft rubber brush or a special glove is enough for care. This helps to remove dead hairs, stimulate blood circulation and make the coat even more shiny.
Secondly, the Thai Ridgeback should be bathed infrequently – about once every 2-3 months or as needed. Frequent bathing can dry out the skin, because it is quite sensitive in this breed. It is important to use only special dog shampoos with a mild composition.
Another peculiarity is that the lack of undercoat makes this breed more vulnerable to cold. Therefore, in winter, the dog may need warm poponas or overalls for walks. And in summer, overheating should be avoided, as the short coat does not always protect from the sun.
Special attention should be paid to the nails: due to activity, the dog may sharpen them naturally, but regular checking and trimming is a must. Ears should be inspected every week and cleaned of dirt to avoid infections. Teeth should be cleaned with a special toothpaste, as the Thai Ridgeback is prone to plaque formation.
It is worth noting that this breed is naturally very clean and does not have a sharp odor of “dog”. This is another plus for keeping in urban conditions.
Character and behavior
This breed of dog with a strong character, independent and at the same time loyal. It is not suitable for beginners, because it requires an experienced owner who can become an authority for her. This breed combines guarding instincts, intelligence and cunning, so training should be consistent, patient and without physical punishment.
In the family, the Ridgeback is loyal and affectionate, loves to spend time with the owner, but not too intrusive. He is wary of strangers and may show restraint in socializing, making him a natural guardian. The Ridgeback can get along with other animals, but because of its strong hunting instinct, it needs early socialization.
It is an active dog that needs daily walks and exercise. Without this, it can become willful or even destructive. The Thai Ridgeback combines beauty, intelligence and strength, but also requires attention, training and love.
