Toy Terriers are true miniature dogs. They combine grace, temperament, courage and boundless loyalty. Despite the tiny size, this dog has a very bright character and is able to become both a loud guard and an affectionate friend on your lap. On average, the weight of the Toy Terrier ranges from 1.5 to 3 kg, and the height does not exceed 25 cm. This is a breed with expressive eyes, graceful paws, dry body and proud posture. The Toy Terrier breed was created to accompany the nobility, and today it accompanies its owners in the modern world, remaining elegant and charming.
The first mention of Toy Terriers dates back to the XIX century, when they began to appear in Great Britain as a decorative version of hunting terriers. These dogs quickly won the hearts of high society representatives due to their compact size, vigor and refined appearance. Over time, the breed gained popularity around the world, and today there are several officially recognized varieties of Toy Terriers.
The term “Toy Terrier” actually encompasses several distinct breeds and subtypes. Each of these has its own characteristics:
TheEnglish Toy Terrier is a graceful dog with a smooth, shiny coat, long legs and pointed ears. One of the oldest representatives of the group. Possesses intelligence, restraint and good physical shape.
Russian Toy Terrier – extremely popular in Europe. It can be both short-haired and long-haired. It has a ringing voice, lively character and cute appearance with fluffy ears in long-haired representatives.
Mini Toy Terrier – unofficial name for extremely small representatives of the Russian or English Toy Terrier, weighing up to 1.5 kg. They are often breed as “purse” dogs, although their character is not soft at all.
The American Toy Terrier is slightly larger, with an active temperament, a more athletic body and short hair.
Manchester Toy Terrier – a breed bordering between small and medium-sized, has a more muscular build and smooth coat, derived from classic terriers.
The Prague Criha is a miniature breed of Czech origin that is often confused with Toy Terriers. It has a compact body, large eyes and a very developed intelligence.
All these varieties are united by compactness, liveliness, loyalty and expressive appearance, but each has its own peculiarities in care.
The Toy Terrier is a breed that requires a special approach in everything. Because of their small size and high activity, they need a high-quality, balanced food with a high content of proteins and fats. Their gastrointestinal tract is quite sensitive, so it is important to avoid sudden changes in the diet and not to overfeed – overweight is dangerous for this breed.
Care for the coat depends on its type. Short-haired Toy Terriers enough regular combing with a soft glove and periodic washing. But long-haired (especially Russian Toy Terrier with long ears and tail) necessarily requires regular combing, prevention of hairballs and haircutting. Haircutting helps not only to maintain a neat look, but also makes it easier to care for at home – the coat does not stick together, does not collect dust, and the dog feels more comfortable in the warm season. This is especially true for the haircut of the long-haired Toy Terrier.
In addition to the coat, claws, ears and teeth require special attention. Claws in Toy Terriers grow quickly and can cause discomfort when walking. Ears should be cleaned delicately, as they are open and prone to dust accumulation. Oral hygiene is a separate important topic, because this breed is prone to tartar formation already at a young age.
This breed is known for its longevity. With proper care Toy Terriers live an average of 12-15 years, and many representatives even reach 17-18 years. Regular checkups at the veterinarian, quality nutrition, hygienic care and love of the owner – this is the formula for a long and happy life for your Pet.
✅- Bathing and skin care:
A Toy Terrier's skin is thin, sensitive and easily irritated. Our groomers use only ultra-soft hypoallergenic cosmetics specially formulated for miniature breeds. Bathing is carried out once every 2-3 weeks - this is enough to keep clean without drying out the epidermis. For long-haired representatives we add a stage of conditioning the coat - this helps to avoid tangling and facilitates combing. After a bath, we always apply a moisturizing spray or a soft balm to protect the skin from drying out and the coat from brittleness.
✅- Toy Terrier Haircut:
Short-haired Toy Terriers don't necessarily need a full haircut, but many owners opt for a light trim for a neat look - under the paws, on the belly, at the eyes. Long-haired representatives (especially Russian Toy Terriers) need regular modeling of the form: we remove excess hair from the ears, tail, legs, form a general line to emphasize the graceful structure of the dog. We pay special attention to areas where hair can tangle - no more tangles after our groomers.
✅- Ear hygiene:
Toy Terrier's ears are like elegant "locators" that quickly catch dust and odors, so regular cleaning is mast. Once every 1-2 weeks, the ears should be cleaned. Our masters gently clean the ears with a special product that does not irritate the delicate skin and does not cause discomfort.
✅- Eye care:
It is because of the structure of the muzzle that the eyes are prone to tear production. We regularly wipe the eye area with alcohol-free lotions and special wipes to avoid staining and irritation.
✅- Hygiene of the muzzle and teeth:
Toy Terriers often have closely spaced teeth, which contributes to the formation of plaque and calculus already at a young age. At V.O.G DOG SALON, we also take care of the smile! Our masters brush your dog's teeth with a fluoride-free paste recommended by veterinarians and teach owners how to do it at home.
✅- Toy Terrier Nail Clipping:
These small dogs don't have the ability to sharpen their claws on the pavement like larger dogs. We trim the nails every 2-3 weeks without waiting until they start to get in the way of walking. Nail clipping is done in good light so as not to damage the pulp - we work with jewelry precision.
✅- Care of paws and pads:
A Toy Terrier's paws are tiny, fragile, sometimes even "baby" paw pads. The pads dry out easily, especially in winter or after walking on hot asphalt. We use special balms that not only moisturize, but also create a protective barrier. So that every step is soft and walks are comfortable.
✅- Combing and anti-static care:
Long-haired Toy Terriers need more than just combing - they need gentleness. In the salon we use combs with a coating that does not traumatize the skin, as well as light anti-static sprays that protect the coat from electrifying, which often happens in mini-breeds with a fine coat structure.
✅- Optional SPA treatments:
We offer luxurious grooming treatments: massages to relax after stress, aromatherapy - everything to make even the most demanding Toy Terrier feel like in a fairy tale.
Toy Terriers have sensitive skin, so frequent bathing can cause irritations. It is recommended to bathe them no more than once every 2-3 weeks, using mild hypoallergenic shampoos. For long-haired representatives, it is also important to use conditioners to avoid tangling.
Short-haired Toy Terriers usually only need a hygienic haircut in the paw area, belly and around the eyes. For long-haired Toy Terriers, regular trimming is recommended to maintain a tidy appearance and prevent the formation of tangles.
Toy Terriers need a high quality small breed food that is high in protein and fat. Their gastrointestinal tract is sensitive, so it is important to avoid sudden changes in diet and to control portions to prevent overweight gain.
Due to their low weight, Toy Terriers do not naturally sharpen their claws, so they need to be trimmed every 2-3 weeks. Long claws can cause discomfort when walking and can even cause curvature of the paws.
Toy Terriers are prone to dental problems, so it is recommended to brush their teeth with a special dog toothpaste several times a week. Regular grooming and check-ups with a veterinarian will help prevent plaque and tartar buildup.
The average life expectancy of a Toy Terrier is 12-15 years. With proper care, good nutrition and regular visits to the veterinarian, many representatives of this breed can live up to 17-18 years.
Toy Terriers can be great companions for families with children, but because of their fragile body structure, it is important to teach children how to handle the dog carefully to avoid accidental injuries.
For example, due to their low thermoregulation and lack of undercoat, Toy Terriers need warm clothing during cold weather. This will help prevent hypothermia and ensure comfort during walks.
