On a sunny day, owners may be upset to see pet hair on windowsills, sofas, plaids, and tables that not so long ago were not visible. And while this may seem like a disaster, it’s the daily routine of living with a pet.
The good news is that molting can be managed or not at all. So if you’re already dreaming of a fur-free couch, read on. We’ll tell you which dogs shed the least, what makes them so special and what hair care looks like in practice.
Why can a dog hardly shed at all?
It’s not magic, it’s genetics. Some breeds have coats that look like human hair. Simply put, they lack a thick undercoat, which is the main culprit behind the fluff everywhere. The structure of the coat also plays a role. Non-shedding dogs either have curly hair or hair that is so dense that it rarely falls out. But that doesn’t mean they don’t need grooming. On the contrary, their hair often tangles, which means regular combing, bathing and grooming is a must for owners.
Top 5 breeds that hardly shed at all
1. Maltipu
Our absolute favorite! The Maltipoo is a mix of a Maltese and a Poodle, so it inherits the best of both: a hypoallergenic coat and almost no shedding. Because the breed’s coat is soft and fluffy, owners should make friends with fluffers, conditioner and a groomer to avoid tearing their hair out due to pile-ups.
2. Poodle
Yes, it’s a classic, and for good reason. Poodles come in a variety of sizes (Toy, Miniature, Standard), but they all have a curly coat that doesn’t shed. That’s why the poodle is one of the most popular dogs for people with allergies. But beauty takes time. If you missed grooming your poodle, get your scissors ready, because tangles appear faster than new memes on the internet.
3. Bichon Frise
Round, white as ice cream balls, Bichon Frisees have a delicate coat that does not shed, ideal for allergy sufferers, but it is thin and easily tangled. Therefore, regular combing and a professional haircut are essential. At our V.O.G DOG SALON, our groomers love bichon haircuts: rounded heads, flat feet, fluffy butts, Asian reincarnations. We can do anything that is not harmful to the health of Pets!
4. Portuguese Water Dog
This dog loves to swim, play, run through the woods, and…. no, he doesn’t leave hair on your brand-new couch. His dense, curly coat has no undercoat, so he doesn’t shed. But without regular brushing, bathing and clipping, even the most active dog can turn into a tangled sea sponge. In the grooming salon you can choose a haircut that will not prevent the Portuguese Water Dog from running, jumping and looking stylish in the photo after a bath in a puddle.
5. Yorkshire Terrier
Yorkies have such a beautiful coat, similar to human hair, that with proper care it shines better than expensive silk. Lignation is not characteristic of this breed, but the pile is quite. To cope with this phenomenon, be sure to moisturize the coat, comb it out and visit the groomer on time. In V.O.G DOG SALON groomers can offer both classic breed variants and creative haircuts, if you and your Pet are ready for experiments and enthusiastic looks.
What about grooming?
As you may have already realized, if you choose a dog that doesn’t shed, hello grooming salons! These pets’ coats need a lot of grooming:
- regular combing out (to avoid collapses, to maintain the shine and structure of the coat),
- bathing with a selection of the right cosmetics (in the salon use shampoo, conditioner and, if desired, a mask for the coat),
- dog haircuts (about once every 4-6 weeks),
- hygienic care (ears, eyes, paws, teeth, paraanal glands).
When you sign up for grooming at V.O.G DOG SALON, you can be sure that the masters will familiarize themselves with the character and health of your dog, take into account all your wishes and give recommendations on hair care between visits.
What about dog owners who shed?
Even if you don’t have a Maltipoo but, say, a Labrador with a heart of gold and hair all over your pants, not all is lost. Here are some proven tips to help reduce the amount of hair in your home:
1. Regular combing. Yes, we’ve said it before, but we’ll say it again. Brush your pet 2-3 times a week, and daily during seasonal shedding.
2. Professional Grooming. Signing up for an express molt at a grooming salon is like a general cleaning, just for the dog. Our groomers at V.O.G DOG SALON have specialized cosmetics, knowledge and all the tools to remove excess hair without harm.
3. Proper nutrition. Wool is a mirror of health. If it is shredded, it is worth revising the diet and adding omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids.
4. Stress control. Yes, dogs shed on stress too. A new place, foreign odors, loud noises, sirens and explosions can all affect the coat. Make sure you have a common routine with your dog and a favorite groomer you trust.
5. Regular health checks. Hormonal disorders, parasites or allergies can also cause excessive shedding. If you’re concerned, it’s best to see a veterinarian. And we can always tell you when we see something unusual during procedures.
