The natural pH is the skin’s protective barrier

Your pet’s skin has its own unique acid-alkaline balance that keeps it healthy. In dogs and cats, this level is different from humans – they tend to be closer to neutral or even alkaline (pH 6.5-7.5), depending on breed, coat type and environment. If the pH is out of balance, it destroys the skin’s natural protective layer, leaving it vulnerable to bacteria, fungi and allergens. Dryness, itching, flaking, and sometimes bad odor appear. And worst of all, the pet begins to suffer, and we may not even immediately recognize that the cause was improper grooming products.

Improper grooming is an invisible threat to the skin

Most problems occur when we use “human” shampoo or generic pet products without paying attention to pH levels. For example, human shampoos have an acidic pH (around 5.5) which disrupts the natural environment of the animal’s skin. The result is irritation, decreased skin immunity, and increased susceptibility to parasites. What looks clean and shiny can actually be the beginning of dermatologic problems. That’s why veterinarians and groomers advise choosing only specialized cosmetics with the right pH – sometimes even individualized for a particular breed. This guarantees not only cleanliness, but also comfort, health and a shiny coat for your pet.

How nutrition affects the pH of your pet’s skin

Although diet does not directly change the pH of your pet’s skin, it plays an important role in maintaining the body’s overall acid-base balance, which in turn affects the condition of the skin and coat. Excess acidic foods such as processed meats, grains or oils can increase inflammation, sensitize the skin to irritations, and provoke dryness, itching or dandruff. But foods with a mild alkaline effect – broccoli, berries, coconut oil, herbs – help normalize internal metabolism, support healthy skin microflora and reduce the risk of irritation. It is especially important to follow a balanced diet in animals with sensitive skin or a tendency to allergic reactions.
