TheGolden Retriever is one of the most beloved breeds around the world. These large, soft and radiant dogs are known for their friendliness, intelligence and extraordinary gentleness. The breed originated in Great Britain in the late 19th century when they were looking for the perfect hunting companion: a dog that could fetch prey from the water, had a soft grip and an obedient nature. Thus came the retriever, a dog that combines strength and affection.
This is a large breed: adult male dogs can weigh from 30 to 40 kg, and bitches – from 25 to 35 kg. The height at the withers is approximately 51 to 61 cm. Appearance is recognizable: long shiny coat of golden color, kind eyes, soft muzzle and strong but graceful body. Retrievers come in English, American and Canadian types. English ones are more massive, with wider heads, American ones are taller and slimmer, Canadian ones are something in between.
Thecharacter of the golden retriever is a real treasure. They are extremely affectionate, child-friendly, easy to train, eager to please humans and always ready to play. They are often brought into therapy programs, as companion dogs or even as guide dogs for people with disabilities. Retrievers are not aggressive, but they are very sensitive: they need a kind attitude, sincere attention and positive motivation.
Retriever puppies are an explosion of joy. They are very active, inquisitive, cute and sometimes a little clumsy. During this period it is important to start socialization, training and accustoming to grooming, because an adult retriever is a big dog, which will be difficult to contain without the habit of procedures.
Caring for a golden retriever takes time and love. The main difficulty is the coat. It is thick, with an undercoat, which sheds a lot, especially in the spring and fall. Regular combing is mandatory, at least 2-3 times a week, to avoid collapses and reduce the amount of hair at home. Bathing – about once a month, or more often if the dog is active and often gets dirty. The retriever’s skin is sensitive, so it is important to use only special products.
Grooming a retriever is about its health. It is not about cutting the retriever “under the machine”, but about proper combing, thinning the undercoat, treatment of areas around the paws, ears, tail, hygienic trimming in the belly area. Grooming a Golden Retriever helps avoid skin problems, keeps it clean and makes it easier to groom at home. In V.O.G DOG SALON salons retrievers are taken with special care: masters know all the nuances of working with this breed, do not allow cutting the protective layer of hair, take into account the body structure, character and even the level of anxiety of the dog.
- Thorough combing of the undercoat:
Retrievers have a dense undercoat that is especially active shedding twice a year. It must be combed out regularly to avoid piling up, overheating in summer, skin problems and dust accumulation. The salon uses special tools for this purpose: furminators, slickers, combs with different tooth lengths. Combing is carried out layer by layer, observing the direction of hair growth, so as not to traumatize the skin. In the period of active shedding this procedure is supplemented with de-shedding - deep combing with the use of special cosmetic products that accelerate the renewal of the coat.
- Bathing with professional cosmetics:
The skin of the golden retriever is sensitive and prone to irritations, so ordinary shampoo from the store can only worsen the condition of the coat. V.O.G DOG SALON uses only premium professional products, which are individually selected: to restore the structure of the coat, moisturize the skin, protect against dehydration or to combat allergic reactions. After shampooing, a conditioner is necessarily applied, which facilitates combing and preserves the elasticity of the coat. The retriever is bathed in a comfortable bathtub with comfortable water temperature, making sure to rinse even the most difficult areas - behind the ears, in the armpits, under the tail.
- Drying and styling of hair:
Drying a large dog at home is not an easy task, especially if it is a retriever with a thick undercoat. In the salon, professional hair dryers with power and temperature control are used to dry the coat completely without overheating the skin. This is important to avoid the formation of dampness inside the undercoat, which can cause fungus, odor and irritation. After drying, the coat is combed and styled to give the dog a natural, neat and aesthetically pleasing appearance.
- Hygienic shearing of individual areas:
It is not possible to completely shear the retriever - its coat has a protective function, especially in summer. But some areas require delicate trimming. Such areas include:
- Paws - the hair between the pads and around them is trimmed to prevent the accumulation of dirt, snow, and collars.
- Armpits and intimate areas - hygienic clipping is important for cleanliness and comfort, especially during the warm season.
- Tail and ears - the shape is corrected, excess hair is trimmed, maintaining a natural look.
- Neck and chest - excess hair is removed, creating bulk and making it easier to groom at home.
Shearing is done with scissors or a trimmer with limiters so as not to damage the length of the underlying coat. Shearing the retriever under a machine is strongly discouraged.
- Ear cleaning:
The retriever's droopy ears create a favorable environment for the development of fungi and bacteria. In the salon, the ears are necessarily cleaned from dirt and excess wax with special means, as well as examined for inflammation or mites. If the hair in the ear canal is too thick, it can be delicately thinned.
- Claw trimming:
Even if a retriever is actively walking, his claws are not always sharpened evenly. Long claws change the posture of the paws, cause pain and can break. The groomer carefully trims the claws to a safe length without affecting the live part. Particular attention is paid to the toes, which often do not come into contact with the ground and are not naturally sharpened.
- Treatment of paw pads:
The paw pads may be dry, cracked or over-dried after walking around town. At the salon, protective balms or sprays are applied to moisturize and protect the paw pads.
No. The retriever's coat has a double layer and has a protective function against heat, cold and moisture. Cutting a retriever's coat to zero is detrimental to its natural thermoregulation and can cause skin irritation and impaired coat growth.
During normal period - 2-3 times a week. During seasonal shedding - daily. This helps to prevent tangles, reduce the amount of hair at home and improve air circulation to the skin.
On average - once every 4-6 weeks or as it gets dirty. The main thing is to use professional cosmetics for sensitive skin. More often - only if the dog walks a lot in mud, water or has skin peculiarities.
Yes. It's one of the most shedding breeds. The shedding is seasonal (spring, fall) and permanent in moderation. Regular grooming greatly reduces the amount of hair at home.
They should be checked regularly and cleaned every 1-2 weeks. Because of the shape of the ears, Retrievers often get inflammation, so it is important to keep moisture and wax from building up.
Yes. Even active dogs don't always file their nails evenly. Nails that are too long can cause pain, alter gait and cause damage.
Ideally from 3-4 months of age. It should not be a full-fledged grooming, but the first acquaintance with procedures: bathing, drying, combing. This way the dog will learn to go to the salons without fear and stress.
Yes. These are hygienic areas where the coat is easily dislodged and accumulates dirt and snow, which can lead to irritation. Trimming here does not harm the overall protection of the coat.
Possible causes are improper diet, lack of care or use of cheap cosmetics. It is important to choose shampoos and conditioners from a professional line and moisturize the skin. At V.O.G DOG SALON we only work with proven products.
Yes, but it is important to choose a groomer with experience with large breeds. In our salons, groomers have a gentle approach, do not break the dog's confidence and adapt to the dog's mood. Often even anxious retrievers feel calm after the first visit.
