Last time we told you how to give a dog a shot – and some of you saved that guide as an emergency manual. This time we want to talk about injections for cats. Technically, everything seems similar: syringe, medicine, needle – but when it comes to a cat, there are a number of little things that make a big difference to the process itself. Cats are more independent, sensitive and not so willing to accept manipulations that were not part of their plans. Therefore, the owner needs to know how to act competently and calmly, so that helping the animal does not become stressful for both.
What you need to know before you take a syringe in your hands
It is very important for cats to create a safe environment. If you are nervous – they are twice as nervous. Prepare everything in advance: a syringe (better insulin syringe with a thin needle), an ampoule with medicine, absorbent cotton or a tissue with alcohol, a clean towel. The medicine should be at room temperature – a cold solution may cause additional discomfort.
It is better to fix the cat: either put it on a flat surface, or wrap it in a towel, leaving open the necessary part of the body. If the animal is aggressive or afraid – do not try to do everything by force. Give time to calm down, stroke, talk affectionately. The cat should feel not trapped, but protected.
Subcutaneous injection in the withers is the best choice for cats
Most medications are injected subcutaneously into the withers area, where cats have thicker and less sensitive skin. To give the injection:
slightly lift the skin between the shoulder blades to form a “crease”;
insert the needle into the lower part of this crease at an angle of 30-45 degrees, not deeply;
slowly press the plunger;
after insertion, pull out the needle and gently squeeze the injection site with absorbent cotton and alcohol.
Cats rarely scream during the injection, but may jerk or jump out sharply, so hold them securely but carefully. If injected correctly – it will only take a few seconds and will not cause severe pain.
Intramuscular injection to a cat: when you can’t do without it
Not all drugs can be injected subcutaneously, and in some cases it is necessary to inject into the muscle – usually in the thigh. But it’s important to remember: cats have a much smaller muscle layer than dogs, and you need to be as precise as possible.
Choose the back of the thigh closer to the outer edge, avoiding the middle (the sciatic nerve runs there). The animal should lie or stand straight. Insert the needle perpendicular to the muscle, slowly, no deeper than 1.5-2 cm (for the average cat). The medicine is also administered slowly. Afterwards – gently massage the injection site.
Never inject more than 1-2 ml in one place. If the dose is larger – it should be divided. And most importantly: do not give such injections without clear instructions from a veterinarian.
Conclusion
The cat is a creature with character and grace, which does not tolerate rudeness. Therefore, and the approach to it during the injection should be delicate. You can help your animal even in a difficult situation if you are confident, calm and well prepared. Even a simple injection can become an act of love – the main thing is that it must be done correctly.
