Belgium is a small country, but it has made a very strong impact in the dog world. And what’s interesting is that most of its breeds are not decorative, but work, control, and function. Here, dogs were created for specific tasks, and you can feel it in each of them.
BELGIAN SHEPHERD DOG
The name Belgian Shepherd hides not just one dog, but four varieties at once: Grunendahl, Malinois, Tervuren, and Lakenois. They differ in appearance, but have the same base – intelligence, speed and control.
The most famous today is the Malinois. It is used in the police, army, and security services. It is a dog that thinks fast and works even faster. The Grunendahl looks more elegant because of its long black coat, the Tervuren is more “warm” visually because of its reddish tint, and the Lakenua has a hard, almost “disheveled” texture.
These dogs are not for a passive life. They are created for work, and without any load, they begin to “break the system” with behavior, energy, and nervousness.
SCHIPPERKE
TheSchipperke looks like a compact, even cute dog, but it is one of the most controlling characters in a small size. Historically, they were used as barge and house guards. They are alert, fast, and very attentive to detail. Their black color and dense coat create a very recognizable silhouette.
BRUSSELS GRIFFON
The Brussels Griffon is a breed that looks almost like a character. Its muzzle expression, beard, emotions – everything is very “human”. It gets very attached to its owner and reacts to the mood.
An interesting fact: they were originally used to control rodents in stables. That is, even here there are working roots that have simply been transformed into a modern format.
BELGIAN SMOUSHOND
The Belgian Smoothhound is a rare and little-known breed that was once very common. It had a similar function to griffins – to catch rats and help in the household. It is a dog with a hard coat, lively personality, and high adaptability.
Today it is almost impossible to meet it, but it shows well what “practical” dogs of that time were like: small, hardy and extremely useful.
LAKENUA
TheLakenois is a type of Belgian Shepherd, but it is often distinguished separately because of its unique coat. Hard, a little chaotic in appearance, it has a practical value – protection from weather conditions. The Lakenua is less “glossy” than the others, but very functional. It is a working dog that needs tasks. Without them, it doesn’t reveal itself.
Conclusion.
Every Belgian dog has a function, and the appearance is adapted to this function.
Even those breeds that look like decorative dogs today have a working past. And if you look closely, it is this past that shapes their character and behavior today.
