In our conversations with dog owners, we at V.O.G DOG have realized that the winter season can be challenging, especially when it comes to taking care of your pet’s paws. The cold and contact with harsh substances such as road salt can be obstacles. But don’t worry, we’ve prepared some useful tips for you:
- Use protective footwear for dogs. It sounds unusual, doesn’t it? But it truly works! It’s one of the best ways to protect paws during cold weather. Protective footwear not only insulates paws from cold ground but also prevents contact with salt and chemicals used for ice melting. If you’re trying protective footwear for your dog for the first time, be patient. Your pet might need some time to get used to it. But a trained dog will happily wear their new boots if it provides them with more comfort during winter walks!
- Use wax-based paw balms. Wax balms create a thin protective film on paws, excellently shielding them from snow, ice, salt, and cold air. They have the same effect as footwear but without the need to wear anything on the paws. Balms also help to moisturize the paws, preventing them from drying out and cracking.
- Rinse paws after walks. One of the simplest and most important steps in winter paw care is thoroughly rinsing them with warm water after each walk. This will help remove any substances that can irritate or damage the skin and paw pads.
- Regularly trim hair between paw pads. Long hair can accumulate snow, sand, and other debris, which can cause discomfort for your dog. Trimming the fur between paw pads can help prevent this.
- Examine paws after walks. This will allow you to detect any signs of irritation, cracks, or wounds. If you notice anything unusual, immediately contact a veterinarian.
Taking care of your dog’s paws in winter may require additional efforts, but following these tips, you can ensure maximum comfort for your pet. Remember, each dog is an individual, and what works for one may not work for another. Regardless of the safety measures you choose, the main thing is your love and care. Be responsible and loving owners, and your furry friends will always be grateful. If you see your dog uncomfortable during a walk, there’s always the option to make it shorter.
