The truth about the profession unvarnished

The profession of a groomer looks attractive: beautiful dogs, gorgeous results after procedures, aesthetics, creativity. But if you go inside the process, it becomes obvious – this is one of those areas where the reality is very different from the picture. And it’s not about complicated tools or techniques. The real difficulty lies in the combination of several factors at once: a live animal, responsibility, physical strain and the constant need to think ahead.

From the point of view of V.O.G DOG SALON and V.O.G DOG ACADEMY, where more than 4000 masters have been trained, we can say straightforwardly: grooming is a profession that either forms strong specialists or very quickly weeds out those who underestimated its complexity.

Working with an animal

In any beauty field, the client understands what is going on and can control themselves. In grooming, they don’t. A dog or cat often doesn’t understand why it’s being washed, dried or clipped. And that creates a basic tension.

Let’s imagine the situation: a routine haircut of a small dog’s paws. For a human, it’s a small thing. For an animal, it’s a zone of discomfort. It may
– twitch
– take its paw.
– fidget
– react violently to the sound of the machine

And here the question is not how to hold the scissors correctly, but whether you can control the situation without stress for the animal and without risk of injury?

That’s why a professional groomer is always a bit of a psychologist. And this is what determines the level of a specialist.

Safety

The skin on animals is much thinner than it looks. Especially in the groin area, under the paws and near the ears. One sharp movement and you can injure it. Beginners often think that the main thing is to trim evenly. In fact, the most important thing is to do it safely.

Case in point: the dog turns his head sharply while cutting the muzzle. If there is no correct fixation, discipline and control, this is a potentially dangerous situation. That’s why we put safety above beauty in our training. Because professionalism is not only about beautiful work.

Physical activity

Grooming is not a sedentary job. It’s constant activity:
– standing for 8-10 hours
– working with different sizes of dogs
– body posture
– strain on the back, arms, legs

This is especially true when working with large breeds. Lifting, fixing, drying – it’s not easy at all. And if a person is not physically ready for it, he or she quickly burns out.

Aesthetics and form

Cutting short can be done by almost anyone after basic training. But that doesn’t make a person a strong groomer. A good groomer also needs a vision of form.

Example:

A poodle comes into the salon with uneven coat density, “flat” sides and a disproportionate head – outwardly this looks like a normal task, but this is where the level difference comes into play. A beginner, as a rule, will just cut the length all over the body, make it more or less even and stop there. An experienced groomer acts differently: he first analyzes the shape before starting work, understands where there is not enough volume, where there is a lot of it, and works not “on the wool”, but on the future silhouette. The groomer raises the volume in areas where the dog looks lost, visually equalizes the body line, corrects the head so that it corresponds to the body, and as a result creates a complete, balanced image. It is through this work with form and proportion that the effect is the client sees a radically different level of appearance – and it is this level that they come back for again.

At V.O.G DOG ACADEMY we work with this mindset separately, because without it the groomer remains at a low level.

Communication with the client

Another thing that is underestimated is working with the owner. Many people want to learn to be a groomer because it is easier to communicate with animals than with people, but few people take into account that first of all they have to please a human client. And for this you need to talk in great detail and fulfill the wishes of the client.

The client often comes with a photo and says: “I want it like this”, but in reality he has a different breed, a different hair structure and a completely different state of the dog. And then the most important thing starts – not just to refuse or say “it won’t work like that”, but to explain competently why the result will be different. It is necessary to convey it in such a way that the client understands the logic and does not feel that he is being refused, while maintaining trust in the groomer and the salon. This is a delicate communication where it is important to be able to present the solution correctly, offer an alternative and show that the result will still be of high quality, just adapted to the specific dog.

It is a separate skill that directly affects income and development.

How is a professional formed?

In our academy we do not limit ourselves to teaching haircutting as a set of actions. We build a system of groomer’s thinking: from understanding the animal’s behavior and controlling the process to seeing the shape, proportions and final result before the work starts. Here it is important to understand “why exactly so”, in what sequence, with what logic and for what type of coat or a particular dog. It is because of this systematic approach that the groomer does not get lost in non-standard situations, does not copy blindly, but makes decisions and works confidently, regardless of the complexity of the task.

3 important components of groomer training:

Base:
– safety
– tools
– process understanding

Practice:
– real dogs
– teacher supervision
– error correction

Development:
– speed
– form
– confidence

That’s why graduates, of which there are already more than 4,000, can work and earn.

Conclusion

Grooming is difficult because you are working in real time with a live animal, with no margin for error and no “do over”. Every movement immediately affects the result, and that result is visible instantly. There is either form, control and pure work, or there is none. And that is why this profession quickly shows the level: who can think, analyze and keep the process – grows and earns; and who works at random – stops.
