Fur is the main pride of the Pomeranian Spitz. And to keep it always looking charming, it requires care. This includes the trimming of the fur coat, which can be done both at home and in specialized salons. Otherwise, the animal will look unkempt – at best. In this article, we will explain why home grooming is not recommended and why it should be done in grooming salons.

Trimming a Spitz at Home: What are the Risks?

There are substantial reasons to believe that trimming a Spitz at home is not only undesirable but even dangerous for the dog’s health. Why? Let’s start with the fact that simply trimming the fur is not advisable – there is a risk of going too far and depriving the animal of its natural protection. If you decide to trim your Spitz short (for example, to keep it cool in the summer), be aware that you are exposing your pet to the risk of skin diseases, including dermatitis and others more serious. Additionally, a short-trimmed Spitz becomes an easy target for ticks, mosquitoes, flies, and other insects.

Another point: many think that trimming a dog with a regular clipper is normal. This is far from the truth, especially for miniature Spitzes. The thing is, a haircut done even once with a clipper forces the dog to wear such a hairstyle always. After such a haircut for Spitzes, restoring the original state of the fur becomes impossible. Also, when using a clipper, the animal is likely to develop alopecia – hair loss due to damaged hair follicles. Moreover, in the summer, the animal may suffer from sunburn. Therefore, we recommend turning to specialized salons, where necessary procedures are performed without risk to your pet.

Dogs should only be trimmed with a special clipper for animals, where the blades are more powerful and better sharpened. This is because, unlike human hair, animal fur is denser and thicker in structure. And while the undercoat is softer, it gets matted and is resistant to grooming manipulations.

What Can Be Done at Home?

You can care for your Pomeranian’s fur by regularly brushing it – this will prevent the formation of mats. It’s sufficient to brush your Spitz 2-3 times a week, as well as after bathing and during shedding. For this, you can use a metal comb with long teeth and a slicker brush. Most other procedures are recommended to be done in specialized salons.

Grooming a Spitz in a Grooming Salon

Professional grooming of a Spitz includes a number of procedures necessary for health and a neat appearance:

  • Bathing with special products selected for the type of fur;
  • Blow-drying;
  • Brushing;
  • Trimming, including in intimate areas and paw pads;
  • Cleaning of eyes and ears;
  • Nail trimming.

Grooming of a Spitz in a salon can be:

  • Traditional – to give a neat appearance;
  • Hygienic – with combing and “express shedding” – for health;
  • Show – contour, to highlight the animal’s advantages and hide its flaws.

Grooming can be performed for the first time when the animal reaches the age of 3 months. The frequency of trimming depends on the rate of fur growth, but it is usually several times a year.
