Samoyed dog breed with an extremely complex coat structure, which requires a serious, technically accurate approach to grooming. And if you’ve ever wondered why your dog “left” the salon after 4-5 hours – this article will answer honestly and unvarnished.

Coat in two floors: and both require attention

Samoyeds have a double coat: a thick, dense undercoat and a long, strong shaft hair. In a normal state, they form a dense “voluminous cocoon” that perfectly protects the dog from the cold. But it is this beauty that is the groomer’s greatest challenge.

To keep the coat looking healthy, it must be combed out layer by layer, from skin to tip, otherwise the undercoat will pile up in tangles at the very base. And here we are not talking about “brushing a few times” – we are talking about a full-fledged combing step by step from all areas: neck, sides, belly, hind legs, “pants”, chest.
It is especially difficult when the dog molts – and Samoyeds molt long, abundantly and almost all year round. In this condition, the hair “falls out in layers”, and it is necessary not just to pull it out, but to do it carefully, so as not to traumatize the skin and not to damage the healthy shaft hair.

Drying is a separate technical procedure

After washing, the Samoyed cannot simply be “blow-dried”. His coat does not dry quickly and does not dry evenly. Because of the dense undercoat, moisture is retained near the skin, and if you leave it even for a few hours – there is a risk of irritation, overheating, fungus.

Therefore, the groomer must dry long, consistently and in the right direction, layer by layer, combing the coat in the process. Drying a Samoyed takes on average from 1.5 to 2.5 hours, if everything is done correctly. Otherwise, the final appearance will not be a “cloud from the advertisement”, but a sticky lump with creases.

In addition, the noise of the dryer must be controlled: some Samoyeds are sensitive to loud devices, and the groomer must be able to work without stress for the dog, and not just “turn on the turbo mode and go”.

Preparation, hygiene, and finishing touches are another 100 details to consider

Besides the basic combing and drying, there are tons of little things that are time-consuming but critical to the outcome.
Before bathing a Samoyed always needs to be combed beforehand – otherwise the tangles will get wet, harden and have to be cut off. Then – special bathing of the Samoyed, often in several stages, with deep cleaning, because the dirt “lives” not on top, but deep in the undercoat.

After that – hygiene of ears, eyes, sometimes trimming of wool in genital area, correction of silhouette with scissors, treatment of paraanal areas, and final styling. And each Samoyed has its own anatomy, coat texture, behavior, which requires an individual approach.

Even the process of “combing” is not 10 minutes. It is the division of the coat into zones, control over the direction of growth, avoiding tears in the shaft hair, and proper completion, so that the volume remains and the coat does not fly in clubs for the next two days after the visit.
