What kind of coat does a Maltipoo have and why is it so “moody”?

The Maltipoo is a combination of two different types of coat, and that’s why it behaves unpredictably. It doesn’t have a classic undercoat like most dogs, but consists of soft, fine hair that can be wavy or curly. This coat is very soft and airy to the touch, but it is this lightness that creates problems.

Each hair is thin and elastic, and it easily intertwines with the others. Because of this, the coat quickly begins to tangle – even for no apparent reason. Normal life is enough: sleep, movement, contact with a bed or harness. Another important point is that the coat does not shed in the usual sense. Dead hair does not fall out, but remains inside, and it becomes the basis for tangles.

This means that Maltipoo’s coat does not “self-clean” and does not disintegrate naturally. It accumulates and only worsens its condition without intervention.

Why regular brushing is a necessity

The maltipoo moves very quickly. If the coat looks normal today, it doesn’t mean it will be tomorrow. Without regular combing, it begins to clump into small knots, which turn into dense tangles in just a few days.

And the main thing to understand here is that a tangle is a dense mass that pulls the skin together, disrupts air circulation, and creates discomfort. The dog may start scratching, become nervous, and irritation often occurs under the tangles.

When the situation is advanced, it is no longer possible to comb the coat without pain. In most cases, it ends up with the hair simply being cut off. That is, all the grooming and all the length is lost at once.

Regular combing works as a defense. It prevents the coat from getting tangled, removes dead hair, and keeps it separated and alive. It’s a simple action, but it makes all the difference between a Maltipoo looking well-groomed or turning into a tangle.

Why you can’t do without salon grooming

Home care is not enough to fully control the condition of a Maltipoo’s coat. Even if you comb it out regularly, there are still things that cannot be done at the same level as in a salon.

Professional grooming means proper washing, deep cleansing, complete drying, and opening of the coat. It is during the drying process that the structure is formed, which is then either easy to comb or immediately begins to stray. The right haircut is also important – it affects how the coat will behave in the future.
