The Welsh Terrier is one of the most charismatic hard-coated dog breeds. It resembles a small Erdelterrier in appearance, but has a smaller size, a very lively temperament, and a special “terrier” stubbornness. It is an active, intelligent, and very energetic dog that loves movement, attention, and constant contact with humans. On average, an adult Welsh Terrier weighs about 8-10 kg, and its height is usually about 35-40 cm.

The breed was bred as a hunting breed, so even today the Welsh Terrier retains its excitement, attentiveness, and strong character. But the main feature of this dog is its coat. It creates the very recognizable image of a neat, stylish, and very “expensive” terrier.

Grooming of the Welsh Terrier

The coat of the Welsh Terrier is hard, dense, and wire-like on top, with a thick, soft undercoat underneath. This structure is designed to protect the dog from dirt, cold, thorns, and moisture during hunting. But it is because of this feature that the breed needs professional and regular grooming.

Unlike many other dogs, the Welsh Terrier’s coat should not be simply clipped to zero. If you constantly shave the hard coat, it begins to lose its proper structure, becomes soft, dull, wavy, and loses the beautiful rich color for which this breed is so appreciated. That is why trimming, a special procedure for plucking out dead hair, is extremely important for Welsh Terriers.

Proper grooming of this breed is a whole system of working with the coat. The groomer must understand the anatomy of the Welsh Terrier, know the breed silhouette, and correctly shape the lines of the muzzle, paws, back, and skirt. Even small mistakes can completely change the dog’s appearance and make it look “out of breed”.

In addition to trimming, the Welsh Terrier needs regular combing of the undercoat, grooming of the beard, cleaning of the coat after walks, and proper bathing with professional cosmetics for hard-haired breeds. Without systematic care, the coat begins to tangle, gets dirty faster, and loses its characteristic shine and texture.

That is why it is better to trust the grooming of a Welsh Terrier to specialists who really work with hard-haired breeds and understand their characteristics.
