Grooming is an integral part of caring for a pet. It’s the foundation of their neat appearance and health. A professional groomer’s arsenal should include a plethora of tools that ensure the cleanliness and beauty of a cat or dog’s fur.
What tools are needed for grooming
The industry has created many useful things, but the basic set should look like this:
- Special clippers for trimming;
- Scissors;
- Slicker brushes;
- Combs;
- Mat splitters.
These tools differ in design and purpose because each type of fur requires a specific tool.
Animal clippers
They come in professional and home-use varieties. They are also chosen depending on the breed of the animal. For instance, a trimmer – a small machine with a fixed small-sized blade – is used for trimming puppies and small individuals. It’s also suitable for trimming small details, like ears, the eye area, and the bridge of the nose.
Clippers with adjustable blade length are used for trimming small dogs (Yorkie, Spitz, Toy Terrier, etc.), but are not suitable for larger breeds. More powerful devices from 45 watts with a cooling system are better for them. They are also designed for long-term use.
For haircuts of various complexities and lengths, a set of blades and attachments is also necessary. Metal blades can be sharpened, but ceramic ones cannot. Attachments are also made of metal or plastic.
Scissors for grooming
Regular scissors – for human haircuts – are not suitable as they can injure the animal. There are special tools for pets, available in different types:
- Straight – for small breeds;
- Rounded – for working with small details of the haircut;
- Curved – used for cutting the tail and face;
- With a screw – allow adjusting the tension depending on the type of fur;
- Thinning – with frequent teeth, used in the final stage of the haircut.
To extend the life of grooming scissors, only cut clean fur with them and treat the blades with special oil after procedures.
Combs for cats and dogs
They also come in different types:
- Ordinary single-row – for pets with thick and long fur;
- With moving teeth – do not cause pain, for timid cats and dogs;
- With bristles – for a massaging effect and detangling mats;
- Slicker brush – a special comb with metal teeth with rounded tips. Used for combing undercoat and preventing mats;
- Furminator – used as a comb and slicker brush;
- With teeth of different lengths – for combing out shed fur, undercoat, and mats.
Mat splitters for grooming
The name speaks for itself – tools for removing mats, which give the fur a neat and beautiful appearance. There are two types:
- Horizontal – several parallel blades, sharpened on one side and rounded on the other;
- Vertical – with long sharp teeth, resembling a rake.
When choosing a mat splitter, consider the length of the animal’s fur – the longer it is, the longer the teeth of the tool should be.
